I always go to my used game store and buy PS2 games. They can be very cheap for some classics, Red Faction was $2. Although because of the outrageous prices on gameboy games I just emulate the pokemon ones.

Consider the reverse: Why would you turn down a game just because its old?

Ok, so some heavy "MP only" games might not be worth it. *cough* MW*cough*, but one of my friends was watching yogscast the other day so now we are both playing Transport Tycoon from 1995.

Hell, I missed KOTOR when it was new, only got it on the steam sale. If I had never played that game I really would have missed out.

Tell him to go play Super Mario World

I have a friend like this too, except he doesn't play old games cause he's a graphics whore. He can't even play Halo 2 anymore because he's "used to much better graphics"

It can be very hard for me to do sometimes though. Im very much an implulse buyer. Having steam on my computer doesnt help. Anytime im on the computer, night or day, I can buy a game. The temptation is always there....Its worse than porn!
I built a very cheap PC (all second hand parts) just to test steam out about a month back. I'm not a massive fan of steam, but I know a couple of indie developers who persuaded me to try it out. I've bought 23 games in less than a month off steam so... I might need counseling, for me the temptation always being there is probably too much. I can't think of any excuse for buying 23 games when I haven't even had time to crack the seal on Skyrim yet.

I own a fairly decent collection of old games for various formats. The problem is that a lot of those older games are made by studios that have shut down - not enough people bought their games new. At least buying games from steam makes me think that a fair proportion of the money I pay is going back to the publishers/devs. I do regret not buying Nier, Crackdown or Blur brand new, even if the games are flawed in my own opinion, because the creators of those games were all shut down.

Old or new - it's your money to spend how you like, but there is wisdom in doing a bit of old and a bit of new in my opinion.

Can't beat a bit of retro gaming, Morrowind still ranks as my number one game of all time.

I recently was in an argument with a friend of mine; I enjoy buying old games when I can. Whether they'd be for the Playstation 2 or even the original Assassin's Creed for the 360 that I traded in a long time ago. He said that it was pointless to buy old games when there were games, such as Arkham City, that I could be spending my money on. I explained to him that sometimes, I prefer to have various games to play rather than just buying one for over fifty dollars. If I can play over 3-4 games for the low price of 20-25 bucks, why shouldn't I play them even if they are a few years old?

So my question for you guys is whether you believe that buying old games is idiotic or simply a way to get more for out of your money's worth?
I think you win this argument hands down not to sound cheesy though this will, games are like wines yes they are nice to drink in the first year they were made but you also get awesome tasting ones that are years old that taste just as good if not better in most cases.

Ha-ha I just read through that and by god I?m an a*se at times :) but shall stick by that analogy

Also if I?m going to buy a game at 40 quid that?s going to be so so or buy 3 games that I know are really good I?m going to go for the 3 games anytime of the day. There is always the realisation of oh my god this game is really good I can?t believe I never got it .Then the feeling of oh wait I got it far cheaper then I would have.....WIN!

I love old games: I re-installed my PC copy of Metal Gear Solid for PC yesterday, and pretty much the only game I'm looking forward to in the new year (other than ME3 of course) is the MGS HD Collection.

Other games I'm playing at the moment are FFIV on my GBA and Ocarina of Time on my N64.

And when it comes to more modern releases I usually stay a year or two behind - I bought AssCreed and RedDead recently for about half the price of what one of them would have cost on release.

I don't really see any need to ride the crest of the wave unless you're into multiplayer, especially as you can get so much more for your money in the form of GOTY editions and vastly reduced prices (or is it that the prices are inflated on launch??!! hmmm...) if you hang back a bit.

I think some people just get caught up in the hype surrounding new releases, I know I do sometimes. But because games are such an expensive and time-consuming hobby I feel much happier standing back and evaluating a year or two's worth of games before planning my purchases rather than impulse buying based on teaser trailers.

OP, do you know what my favorite game of all time is?

No? It's The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. That's right, a game that's almost as old as I am. And I still from time to time buy games for the SNES I have hooked up.

So no, buying old games is not stupid. With the current trends in modern gaming, sometimes it's nice to go play an older game to remember why you started in the first place.

Some of the best games are old games. Why would you consider it pointless?

If you mean, is it pointless to buy old games when they are likely to be re-released, then somewhat. But if you would rather play in the original format or if you don't have the money for the newer console to play the remake, then still not really pointless.

Of course it's pointless. It's like any other form of media. Why would I bother watching Citizen Kane when the new Transformers movie just came out on DVD? It's just common sense.

If you'll excuse me, I've been wearing these clothes for almost five minutes now and I have to go burn them.
Win.

Seriously, well played. I wish I could top this, but....

Old games rule! There was a time when games were completed and then released to the public. You know how Arkham City has a ton of multiplayer skins? In the old days, they would have been on the disc and unlockable as you beat levels of the game or, the game itself on varying difficulty levels. Multiplayer for games such as Halo 2, Perfect Dark (and Zero), and, Battletoads is still fully available if you have those games, a console, two or more controls and, a single TV. The best part though is that when you buy an old game disc or cartridge, you actually own it and are able to lend it to friends and, use it in other applicable systems than the one you use at home. Sometimes you have to bring your own memory card but sometimes you don't. I miss the old days and I miss the old ways...

Damn...Excuse me while I search under my desk for my jaw. Did you have more than one copy? Wasn't Hagane a Blockbuster exclusive game? I think it was in the U.S. but I don't know about EU...

Link to the Past is my favorite of the series. People seem to forget that Ocarina uses the same structure and progression system as LttP.

Assassin's Creed for the 360
A game that came out only 4 years ago is not old. Hell, I'd argue against a game that came out 8 years ago being called old.

As for your friend, ask him if he watches movies made more than a year ago. Does he only read books published this year? Does he have no pre-2011 albums in his music collection? None of the above things need to be current to still provide powerful experiences. Games are no different.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to play Master of Orion 2 (1996, and I suppose I'd classify that as old, although only grudgingly) ...

I prefer to stick with new games. I play the occasional old game but most of them age poorly. Even most games from last year I can barely stand. Of course there's some gems out there that I'm glad I stumble upon.

Perfect example. The recent Conan the Barbarian film with Jason Mahmouwuowuwramalamadingdog. I know the escapists resident film critic absolutely panned this film, but personally I loved it. It set out exactly what it was supposed to do and it was devoid of two things. Period dating (from both the cinematography and musical stylization) that makes it clearly a 1980s film, and extensive amounts of cheesy acting. (Id gladly take bad acting over cheese) In the abscense of that, it made the film rather watchable and enjoyable.
Erm what?
If you don't love the Basil Poledouris soundtrack of the original Conan you clearly have some sort of testosterone deficiency. That stuff could grow a scrotum on a stone.

Why would buying old games be pointless? The only disadvantage old games have over newer games are the graphics, and, frankly, I think all the people that come and register to this kind of site have long agreed that graphics aren't all that important. Maybe some design philosophies were different back then (Not neccesarily worse. Cover based shooting wasn't around, though that may be considered a negative by most, it's a big positive for me), maybe some common things that we take for granted were done worse (Aiming with the keyboard on some games such as Bungie's "Marathon"), but those games are were todays games come from, and some of them are in the honored position of "GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME" for many.

Put it this way: People today who don't buy older games won't play Deus Ex 1, the System Shocks... Heck, even the Half-Lifes (In my opinion, the best series of all time) might be considered "Old games". Believe me, I'm no "Retro gamer" nor do I fondly look back at the "Good old times" when the best graphics were 8-bit, but I will say this over and over: Plenty of games as far back as the Atari 2600 were excellent, and you're loosing out if you don't play them.

Also, the fall in prices makes it even triple worth it. If I remember right you could buy 10 copies of Deus Ex for what Skyrim (An equally excellent game) is worth on Steam (That is, taking the Steam price of both games).
