I'll be honest, I don't spend much time playing online anymore (If I do at all its just L4D2 or Halo 3 social match), but I remember back in the day cheating was a huge problem. I ask this because recently my much younger cousin got a modded controller that more or less functions as a turbo controller as far as I could tell. Anyway it allowed him to basically accomplish feats in MW2 that he otherwise would not be capable of doing within the game's intended design. He told me all his friends were doing it... is this true? I remember people used to pull this kind of shit on XBL in the Halo 2 days but I figured they cracked down on this and as far as I can tell not enough of these people are getting banned. So is it still as bad as it always has been... or worse?

(Keep in mind this regards console gaming and includes all forms of online cheating/modding)

Cheating is always terrible in online games. People always want to win, and if they suck, they cheat. A lot of people suck, so a lot of people cheat. Thankfully companies are a wee bit better these days at cracking down on it. Though sometimes they go a bit overboard.

Cheating is for personal gaming only. Doing it outside that venue is anti-fun.

I think cheating is at an all time low.

There is a much larger community of players, who have more anti-cheating technology easily available, with larger consequences for cheating being present.

Is cheating at an all time high? No, but complaining about it certainly is.

Hell, I haven't seen anyone actually cheat in a looong time. Nowadays, it's all about the way we behave when we play. In other words, we don't get banned for cheating anymore, just for being a dick.

I would say that the huge problem with cheating in games today is that there barely are any available in the new single player ones! I kinda like having (actual hidden) cheats in a game, not the bullcrap ones you have today wherein you can beat a game three times to earn unlimited ammo and a revealing outfit with a pink hat.

I suppose a big reason they have gone away is that no game these days relies on a password system.

But, to stay on-topic, I don't think cheating is a big problem online. I hardly ever play stuff online, though, and when I do I suck so much at the games that I wouldn't know whether or not the others are cheating anyways.

Nah, cheating is no problem on the PC version. I hate all of the people that say "VAC SUCKS" because you could have it MUCH worse off in many games...

I personally have never really seen a cheater in Team Fortress 2. I guess that's because there is no point to aimbot lol...

What consequences? It's rare for anyone to actually get caught cheating and then get banned or something for it.
VAC and losing Xbox privileges are the two examples that come to mind.

Even if it's rare to happen, it's still more than nothing, which is basically what used to exist.

I haven't seen cheaters in MW2 yet, and i'm almost lvl 70.

Though i would agree that PC cheating is much more common.
Read what the person I quoted wrote. He was talking about how occasional cheaters get caught and banned pretty fast on pc games because of dedicated servers. But since MW2 lacks dedicated servers... well you get the point.

Hmm I play PC games.. so most people are banned for said cheating. Though I could understand how it would be annoying since on some servers (for TF2) people can apply for premium accounts which give them well "cheats" and it sucks to play on the servers. FOR example turrets that have homing missiles, and which are almost indestructible, everybody moves at the speed of the scout and the spy can stay indefinitely cloaked. So yeah.

I have noticed that cheating online in multiplayer games is actually becoming more rare. Actual cheating that is not just camping or taking advantage of a glitch. (both of which are shady gaming practices, but not cheating in the same sense as hacking a game or modded controllers are). The technology makes cheating more difficult, an there is a greater chance of being caught due to the feedback systems in most online servers.

I say It's about the same, if not, worse if we're talking about the amount of people who do it.

I didn't even know they had cheaters on consoles considering I always looked at it as a programming issue, I never thought of modding the controller.

but good enough gamers can even beat bots no matter how good the bots are. hell back in my old UT2K4 days, I'd play Instagib and there'd be a bot and I'd still beat it and these things are programmed with 100% accuracy instant kill lazers you had to time yourself going every where, use the teleport disc thing (forgot the name) and build up enough adrenaline for speed.

It also depends on whats called cheating.
some things I do that might be considered cheating:
-I use guides for ridiculously large amounts of collectibles like assassins creed (I never used to: Spyro and GTA games I can remember doing without guides)
-I've considered boosting for achievements on games that no-one plays anymore (for instance no-one plays king of the hill or submission matches in gears 2 so I might boost one day or another)
-the amount of money I've made on guitar hero world tour by having other people be my character for a whole party is crazy high and I'll probably do the same thing for DiRt mileage (lol the little kid across the road says he wants to play "Drift"(?))

I personally think cheating, as long as it's only hurting your own skill as a gamer, is fine, whats really bad is button mashing noobs in fighting games and then they have the nerve to boast.
