I recently (May 17th) got the complete Firefly series on dvd and watched it. I thought it was pretty good. I'm not sure why Fox cancelled it, or why Syfy didn't get the rights to it (instead of more B-movies...), but I'm not going to argue that.

Then I watched Serenity. Due to spoilers (and my lack of intelligence as to how to set those up in forums), I won't go into detail, but several events make me think that the series is dead despite the huge fanbase (other than that I thought it was pretty good).

What do you think?

I loved the series and enjoyed the film, however I think it is dead which is ashame, although it is set up so they can pick it up and make another series

LALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!
...okay, denial stage is over with.
I want to believe that Firefly could have have some kind of continuation. Whether it's in comics or movies, I don't care. But I'd love to see more of that wonderful universe.
And I remember reading somewhere that if Whedon got a chance, he'd make the movie non-canon, so he could pick up where the series left off.

Ahhh, Firefly, what a show.

I don't know about it being dead. Some time ago the SciFi channel did a Firefly marathon. I was so annoyed that I was working.

I havn't seen the film myself.

It's dead. The whole point of Serenity was to wrap up plot points and loose ends, and tie the whole thing together. There were a couple of graphic novels set before the movie as well, but it will never be revived. Which is a good thing. Otherwise it would never have become a cult classic.

Edit: It was freaking awesome while it lasted though.

Yeah, at the moment it seems pretty dead, which is a shame. I think the original reasons for it being canceled were the production costs and lack of public interest (due in no small part to fox messing with the order in which the episodes were shown).

I only got into Firefly last month and was devastated to found out it had finished so long ago, still brilliant series and film.

Yes, it's done. The only way anything Firefly related is coming back is in comic book form.
It's a shame really, I'm sure it's an ideal show for a DVD special every year or something.

Fox cancels everything. Well, almost everything. If a show comes out on fox, wait till season 2 and you might have actually found something that they'll get around for a bit.

Story-wise, there are plenty of avenues that could still be explored.

But realistically, it's dead. No way you'd get that cast back together and get production started again. If they did, they wouldn't be able to create the same feel. Sort of like how I fully expect Boondock Saints 2 to totally screw up that franchise. You can't have a long hiatus and then bring back the magic...it doesn't work that way.

Too late now surely. Even if Serenity was declared non-canon, it would be quite an effort to get the cast back together after so much time has passed. Whedon appears to have moved on too. Shame, but it doesn't look like a comeback is likely.

yes it's dead and funnily enough it was the fans who killed it

the tv show came out and fox did some bad things and had it canceled, the dvd sold well so they made a film. no one went to see the film, even tho the "fanbase" was demanding more Firefly, they decided to download it or wait till it was on dvd causing the film to bomb and utterly fail at the box office.

so if they really liked and wanted the series to continue they should have spent the money and went to see it in theatres

Yes, it died after Serenity (and the comic) wrapped up most of the loose ends.
But at least it was a peaceful death.
Without serenity, the fans would've been left hanging forever.
Now we at least know the origin of the reavers, that the truth has been spread and that there'll be a difference in the entire solar system (even though we don't get to actually see it).

It is, and has been for a while, dead. It was a great series, and had so much potential.

Fortunately however it'll never tank.
