I've been wanting to buy a new game for a while now, and Gears of War 2 seems like it's pretty good. For those of you who already have it, is it worth buying? Pros/cons?

Yes, especially if you liked the first installment. The graphics are great, the gameplay is great (for a console- PCers, don't jump on this), and the story gets the job done. And, it's a good co-op game if you have some friends that want to play.

Nothing special. Only if you really want to hear the continuation of the terrible and badly made story should you get it. GoW is just an overrated series due to its amount of blood and chainsaws.

The idea was good. WWI style trench/cover warfare that demands a lot of patience and timing. But the AI in the single player is too stupid and the people online do nothing but charge you with chainsaws (which have been given a MAJOR unbalanced upgrade from GoW 1) or shotguns (which are still overpowered for a weapon THAT YOU SPAWN WITH!!!). Good idea, bad execution.

If you prefer a quality story, campaign modes, then you might not enjoy it, its about the same length of the first one, just people don't realise it, if you really enjoy gameplay and replay value, then yes, it is a great game, even if you don't go online in multi the bots can provide some challenge.

What was the unbalanced upgrade? The only thing I see different about the chainsaw component is a new back-kill animation and the inclusion of dueling. The Lancer itself only has a bigger clip and all the weapons seem far more accurate than they were in the first game but that's probably because we can see the shots leaving a trail behind this time.

Gears 2 is worth it because of the expansive multiplayer. Horde is alot of fun, plus you have the ability to play against bots, which is good for practice and getting away from assholes on xbox live. The story is fun, but to me i was a little disappointed with the voice acting. Get Call of Duty World at War i heard the story is good, plus you have the Nazi zombie game mode. The only drawback is that the multiplayer is pretty much the same as CoD 4, just set in WW2.

Yeah, it's overrated, however it's still fun. Tons of fun. Games don't have to be sophisticated to be fun.

Also, I see nothing wrong with giving people a powerful, if limited weapon at start up. It seems better than letting the round be a race for a superweapon so they can promptly slaughter everyone else with it.

Horde is the only decent mode of the entire game in my own opinion. I couldn't get into the "story", found the single player campaign to just be boring, got annoyed with the kind of players and long waiting times in finding matches really fast.

Also, instead of having people decide for you what games might be "worth" buying, you should just look at videos and reviews of it and find your own opinion. To some this game is worth it, to others, it's not.
It always seems to me that threads like these are a set-up to ensure that if you don't like the game, you can blame everyone besides yourself for having made a wrong purchase.

I'm not attacking you, the OP, here, but basically every single "Should I buy Y or X" and "Is X worth buying?" threads out there in general.

Blood and limbs does not equal fun to me. I don't need gore so long as it actually has a point, in a compelling story for example. Besides, you have one animation for the front and one for the back. Not much variety.

In GoW 1, it was easier to lower an enemies chainsaw. In GoW 2, it is harder. The chainsaw was upgraded but the shotgun was downgraded a little bit due to stopping power, but both are overpowered for spawning weapons.

Fun, yes. But not worth $60 I think unless you really love the online.

Absolutely yes. It was my personal game of 2008 (Fallout 3 not withstanding as I haven't played it yet). Some of the settings you fight in awe jawdropping and they've tightened up the gameplay even more. I couldn't put it down; and Horde mode is the icing on the cake.
The only con to me was that the vehicle sections aren't as enjoyable as the on foot sections.

It's quite fun.

Pros:
-Decent story, bit hard to follow, but you'll get the gist.
-Good gameplay, amazing one-button cover system
-Horde is an awesome substitute for 4 player Co-op
-Multiplayer is improved from Gears 1

Cons:
-If you didn't like the first game, I doubt it'll change your mind.
-Macho-man attitudes are a bit annoying
-Random portion of the game tries to be horror and has no significant impact on the game's plot, but may set up for something in Gears 3
