Depends on where you're from in the world.

Americans tend to pronounce it MAH-rio, whereas UKbros would say it Marry-oh.

I have never, ever, heard it pronounced Mary-O... Definitely Mari-O.
Also I always figured pokemon was more like poke-air-mon.

I've never ever heard the pronunciation Mary-o. Maybe your mate was just trolling you.

They both sound the same.

Which is fucking stupid.

Settling this objectively:

1. In the games, when it is pronounced, it is always pronounced "MAH - ree - o."

2. It is the masculine form of the name "Maria," which I've never, ever heard pronounced "may - ree - a."

3. In Italian, the vowel E is what makes what we consider the long A sound, or "ay." The vowel A is almost always pronounced as "ah." So, it's not an American pronunciation. It's an Italian pronunciation.

Also, it's "poke-ay-mon." There is an acute accent over the e in pokémon, indicating it is pronounced as "ay." It's neither poke-ee-mon (which would require an additional e), nor poke-uh-mon (which would be an unstressed vowel sound, counter to what the accent indicates).

Marry as in "No I won't marry you, you selfish bastard".

Oh as in "Uh-Oh that strange person is staring at me".

Marry-Oh.

The official way to say it is 'Mah-ree-o'.

The way I say it (being British) is 'Ma-ree-o'.

The 'h' makes a big difference

The correct pronunciation is マリオ。

In all seriousness though, the guy himself pronunces it MAH - ri - o, but if I remember correctly, characters like Peach make it indeed sound more like Mary-o.

Who cares?

Also, I say Mari-oh, but one great guy called Slowbeef says Marry-oh.

He first says Marry-oh a little after 0:44.

Well there you have it.

MAH-rio

Your friend obviously forgot that Mario is intended to be Italian, not American.

It's Pok-eh-mon (or Pok-ay-mon)

(for those of you not familiar, eh is pronounced "ay", as in "hey")
