Morally wrong?

It depends on where you live.

Here in the UK, dogs are helpers and companions.

I wouldn't eat one of my friends, so I think it's wrong to eat a dog.

Not that I judge people who do in other countries. I also don't like the idea of eating a sheep's eyeballs, but hey, that's a delicacy in some places.
This
It is a cultural thing really, if i would grow in a place where people eat dogs i wouldn't see anything wrong about it.

It's not morally wrong, people just have a bleeding heart for things that are cute. Why do you think people put up such a stink over eating lamb or veal? Because they come from baby animals. Why is the seal hunt such a big topic? Because baby seals are damned adorable. For a lot of people, they get outright offended at the idea of eating something like that (even though eating seals isn't nearly as common as bludgeoning them and skinning them).

No its not morally wrong don't think i'd eat a cat or a small dog unless i really needed to like in THE ZOMBIE END OF THE WORLD but then again cultury i think i would try it once. As I say you can eat anything as long as you know anything can eat you :)

Couldn't eat a dog, I own one. Cats I don't like as such but I'd only eat one if there was nothing else to eat.

Food is food is food is food.

The issue is, in my opinion, more along the lines of how it tastes. And, I suppose, how healthy it is. But meat is meat, really. The idea that you shouldn't eat something because it's adorable and fuzzy, versus something else because it's less so... that's just silly. There's far better reasons to eat or not eat something, but morals have nothing to do with it.

Huh. I did not know that. ^^

I see where you're going with that, but that is a slippery slope. A few years ago (eg pre-1980s), homosexuality was considered taboo. There still wasn't anything morally wrong about it.

Morality has to do with "the good" - speaking philosophically - and that usually has to do with harming others or improving your living conditions. It doesn't harm society to eat a dog, and if you're starving, I imagine it would improve your living conditions.

Of course, if you ate Timmy's beloved dog, then you've harmed Timmy. That would be morally wrong, but it would have more to do with stealing a beloved companion from Timmy than the fact that you ate him. IE - running over Timmy's dog is just as bad.
I completely agree with you on the slipper slope concept.

However, taboo simply refers to something that is culturally unacceptable at that point in time. For the most part, the majority of people thought homosexuality was exactly this in the past.

Of course society has never been perfect, as it is constantly evolving. Now days, the majority of people (at least in my experience) have no problem with homosexuality.

Taboos are usually initial responses to seeing something, without a true background story, or not caring for the reason at all.

If you saw someone eating a dog on the side of the street, how would you respond? Initially it would seem slightly barbaric, I mean, who is that dog's owner?

If the man further came fourth the explain he was a homeless person, and it was a stray dog, some people would see that as acceptable.

Of course, this line of thought will eventually bring us to the intrinsic value of human life vs non-humans, but we'll leave that for another time.

Fortunately, society seems to be evolving in a generally positive direction across the board. Although again, that's subjective. I believe someday society may actually become completely objective. Weighing the actual causes and effects to everything, before shutting down ideas they feel is wrong.

If they're domesticated and seen as a stature high enough to been seen as a family, then yes.

If they're wild, no.

Personally, this may be because I don't have any pets of my own but I wouldn't have any problems with eating a cat or a dog more than I would with say a sheep or a pig. While the UK I've never seen anywhere that serves either if I ever go to China and get the opportunity to try some I probably will. However, I'm interested to see what everyone else thinks as I know a lot of people get really emotional about pets and wouldn't want to see a distant cousin of their beloved Mr. Cuddles in a burger, which I can kinda understand.

So Escapists, what are your opinions?
Ever eaten at one of those cheap faux chinese buffets downtown? That wasnt beef and chicken you were eating...

I read somewhere that animals that eat other animals have their blood chemistry changed and makes it poisonous for consumption

although i dont remember where i read that

other than that, no i dont think its "Morally" wrong, and hell if you knew about the amount of people selling "Tacos" off dog meat in the streets of México you would be amazed

hell there was a history about a "taquero" (guy that sells tacos) that stole the pets of his neighborhood and made tacos out of them, he was even invited to a show to defend his case, he brought along his "cart" (where he sells his tacos) and gave the audience free tacos for the duration of the show, when he was pressured to say the truth, he admitted to kill stray dogs and sell them as meat, but he never stole a pet

halve the audience said "UGH" and spit its tacos, while the other halve kept eating as if nothing had happened, hell they even asked one of the guys that had kept eating the whole time and he said "i don´t care what it is, it tastes good"

Nothing wrong about it.
The thing is that we use dogs/cats as companions and pets..
So eating them feels wrong, when it isnt really..

^This^ eating people's pets is sick. Even if that pet is a pig, a chicken or a cow.

Also, if they're farm-raised [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_meat_consumption_in_South_Korea] livestock [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_meat], no. Not wrong at all.

In the moral question about wheter or not it's right or wrong to eat meat, whatever animal it is, is of no relevance.
