I think you're putting too much stock into what other people think of you. From the short impression I get from your post, you aren't a douche, and rather a nice and considerate person, so that shouldn't come through just because you're playing the guitar.

Douchebags are douchey when they do everything, I don't think the action itself so much makes the person in question a douche. Here in Asheville, NC, the city kinda prides itself on being the "San Francisco of the East", so there's lots of spontaneous drum circles, prayer/chanting/meditation circles, and of course busking involving instruments of every type. I even saw a dude with a full Neil Peart setup drumset on the sidewalk going nuts with solos and he was actually making money doing it.

I'd say give it a shot, the action itself won't make you a douche, and feel out your surroundings. If people go out of their way to avoid walking near/past you, or if someone tells you that it's bothering them, find out whether it was what you were playing or if the location wasn't well suited to any kind of playing.

Either way, if you'll never be asked to be on Jersey Shore, and your friends have never told you you're a douche, and you've never looked in the mirror and thought you were seeing a douche, I have trouble imagining that simply playing the guitar is gonna go ahead and make that a reality.

For the record, I don't see anything wrong with keeping the guitar case open. It's not like you're begging, and a lot of people end up delighted to encounter some live entertainment on their travels, and even a dollar shows they appreciated it, and that it funds new strings/capos and stuff like that. It doesn't make you a panhandler because you're offering a service.

If I'm walking down the street and there's a old man in rags with a smile on his face dropping a sweet lick, I'd probably drop a buck or two in the tin cup.

If I'm walking down the street and there's this kid playing the exact same damn rift for about 20 minutes, wearing pink/red skinny jeans and wearing a damn Asking Alexandria or A Day to Remember shirt... I'd probably laugh, call him a douche, and steal the $5 that his mom put in the jar before he left the house.

So yeah, it depends.... I guess the real question is:
"Who the hell wears pink skinny jeans?!"

I honestly don't know the people you're talking about... but I don't hang out in colleges or cities, and most people I know who play guitar play mostly metal or blues.

Regardless, I say play your guitar and don't worry about the image you give off. The douche aura comes from within. If you're playing for yourself (as opposed to for attention), it will show.

If you know more than "wonderwall"...
Play some blues, rock, etc and you should be good.

If you decide to play acoustic-songs you wrote yourself and sing "meaningful lyrics" to go with them in order to impress a group of girls, you are a douche.

Step 1) Find a bench
2) Sit on bench
3) take guitar out of case
4) close case
5) play.

I think that covers it.

Hell, I bet most people would enjoy listening to something nice, rather than the normal hustle and bustle of either cars going past or mumblings of conversations.

Of course there is always the "who gives a fuck what you look like and what people think about you" attitude. You are barely ever going to see these people, they also mean nothing to you (if half of them died you wouldn't shed a tear). Stop worrying what people may think, it only serves to make you worry rather than happy.

Set up an electric guitar and rock the shit out of anyone who passes by. Just make sure you know how to play the song though.

You will always look like an idiot if you're using an acoustic guitar. Unless you can rope in a few other people to play with.

Bottom line if you play awesome music you won't get labeled a douche.

Just as long as you're not wearing an Atari logo t-shirt, you should be fine. That, and not be 12 years old.

Homemade sign with your facebook and twitter details optional....

Well of course it's possible. Playing well and not repeating the same part over and over is a good start. Don't try to look like you're deep, play because you enjoy playing. Sitting in a way to make it inconvenient to pass you will make you look like a douche even if you manage to accomplish all the other points. You could play like a god and still be a douche. Be respectful of people since you chose to play in public.

Position yourself somewhere you aren't making a spectacle of yourself, around the side of buildings, or in a lesser used part of a park.

As people have said, song choice is important. There are a selection of tunes that just scream 'douche trying to hit on girls'. Wonderwall, James Blunt, Jason Mraz etc. Don't play them. Try some more difficult, and less known tunes, or some less known classic rock riffs.

The difference is you are playing the guitar for yourself, not other people. so choose a place where you are alone, and a song that you enjoy.

If it's an electric guitar with headphones there's no problem. Otherwise it just tends to come off as a douchey cry for attention.

Take a piece of paper with some notes on it and play as if you'd practice, that shouldn't hurt, if it's a nice weather outisde people'll understand that you want to be outside at the same time. Otherwise ask for permission to go to a (music) class after hours to practice?

Elementary - Dear Watson said:
As long as you are not wearing thick rimmed glasses, a low v neck top with your shitty tat showing, a cardigan and skin tight jeans.... then you won't look like a nonce!

I sometimes live near Bath in England, and there are many street performers there... so that attracts lone guys with guitars too... 40-60 year old jamacans singing acoustic reggae is definitely not poncy, and is actually pretty awesome!

The greasy haired, uni drop outs/art students, with all the tats and peircings, who don't really care what people think of them, and have their giutars because they like to have a sing along with there mates are also not gubs!

The only real divs are the ones who take there guitars, as you mentioned, playing one song on repeat, because they are posing tossers!

Also, playing in public, songs should be kept to accoustic raggae, blues, ballads and not soft versions of your favourite rock songs[footnote]Unless, of course, done for comedy purposes, such as Rape Me by nirvana, Song 2 by Blur or Slayer's Raining Blood! Hell... i'd love to see a live accoustic version of Her Ghost in the Fog by Cradle of Filth! :p[/footnote], or Brit-pop[footnote]Although, of course Brit-pop is rife with songs that are attractive for sing along purposes... this doesn't mean they should be played or sung along to![/footnote]! Also, any song that was written as an accoustic track is fair game... Also the guitarist should also be able to sing as s/he plays, and actually be a good singer! Oh, and songs should be kept, on average, to less popular, more unknown songs, as then you can't hear if they go wrong at any point!

Oh... and all people playing in public should know Stairway to Heaven and Dust in the Wind as popular choices... and should be able to, on demand, play Classical Gas. I know it is a hard tune, but it's a hard world...!
Huh, my sister lives in Bath.

Are you just playing, or busking? Because busking is a whole different kettle of fish.

I remember back in Manchester when I was at uni, during christmas periods, there would be a string quartet playing outside the Arndale centre. Now that was classy. Think thats the only time I've ever given money to someone playing an instrument (or instruments in this case) in public. What? I was going to give it to crazy shouty man down the street. He wouldn't even play his guitar. He'd just throw it up in the air and catch it. Which... I guess... is impressive.

What was the question again?

If you can only play one song, and continue to play that song, badly, for hours on end, yes. Otherwise absolutely not, I love public live music, both hearing and playing it. Of course, some places are out of bounds, like libraries...

Wow, best poll options I've ever seen!

The way I see it- when you get good enough to play the guitar well, you somehow lose the urge to play around campfires and on trains. It's all part of the learning curve. If you feel no urge to inflict your playing on non-paying members of the public, you must be starting to get pretty good ;)
