I have done it once before and I found it to be strange, but hey whatever floats your boat...

I have never been to the movies alone !

Never thought about it before but this question made me realize it... How strange.

I think I would feel like the odd man out, alone in the theater. On the other hand, if people judge me because I am alone, they are superficial dickwads.
Though I don't believe I would go to a movie alone.. I would get bored when I couldn't whisper suggestive and inappropraite jokes to a mate besides me, or try to sneak an arm around a girl by my side :p

I picked 'yes' because there's definitely a social stigma attached to it and I've never done it personally. If I don't have anyone to go see a particular film with, I miss it and wait for the DVD/Blu-ray.
Reading all the comments is making me rethink it, though... I might try going alone one day. My mate went to a football match alone last weekend so I might try going to the cinema alone.

Most of the times, I go alone. I just can't stand indecisive friends that have so much to do in their life and need three weeks to let me know when they'll be available. I just pick the time I like and go, usually the first or second day. I also love to go in some weird time, like 4-5 pm and the cinema is almost empty. I sit where I want, there are no noisy people around, but only a few of people like me who just want to go and watch the movie in peace and I enjoy the movie for which I paid, instead of being annoyed by people who go to the movies just to troll other viewers. So, nope, I don't find it weird at all.

However, some movies are not as fun when you watch them alone, so. For example, me and my friend went to watch some Twilight sequel to the cinema and pretty much all audience was there only to laugh (it was the last day of screening or something, so there were no fans there, as they all watched it the first day probably). It wouldn't be as funny if I went alone and/or if I was surrounded by hardcore fans or if there weren't much people there.

But yeah, there's nothing wrong with going alone. I see a lot of people going alone, not just me.

I find it odd. Not that other people do it, but for me. I have always went to a movie with someone, be it a friend or family member. I don't think going alone will ever compare to have someone with you.

Yeah, that's weird. I don't think I've ever seen someone in the cinema by themselves.

I went to the movies alone, for the first time ever, when Sucker Punch came out.
No problem, it was nice to appreciate the movie instead of being constantly aware of your company. You can't discuss stuff that happens, but it's fine anyway.

Personally I would say yes it's weird, but what is more weird is wasting a perfectly good movie ticket. So if you can't find anyone else to go with, just do it, no one will care.

That depends on the movie. Going to see a romantic comedy by yourself would be weird, but if the movie you're going to see is a porn movie, then it's not weird at all. ;-D

Not if you bring a puppet along with a picture of your ex's face glued on it. Then attempt to feed it popcorn throughout the film. Otherwise you just look creepy.

No, you're just watching a movie. However, I prefer to watch with others, and definitely recommend it. It's fun to discuss it later, bad movies turn good and it's an excuse to hang with friends (or to get some alone time with a girl you fancy).

Not weird persay, but I'd never do it alone. Just as I'd never go out to dinner alone. I regard those things as social activities, and while you CAN do them alone...eh I find it cheapens the experience if you do. I also don't see the appeal of traveling alone. There are some experiences that don't mean as much if they aren't shared.

That being said, to each their own, you know? If you enjoy the experience solo, then by all means go alone. Social stigmas that would judge you for something like that are pretty stupid.

Nah, it's not weird at all. I've went to movies by myself before. Sometimes it's better that way. xD I simply cannot stand it when I watch a movie with someone and they are asking me questions that I clearly do not know because it is my first time watching it too!! JUST SHUT UP AND WATCH THE MOVIE!

I don't have a whole lot of friends, and the ones I have really don't like the same types of movies I do, so 3/4 times I go to the movies by myself. I feel a little awkward at times, but in the end watching a movie isn't really a social experience. The movie isn't going to be better if I'm with someone else and apart from the company on the way there and back, it isn't the best opportunity to socialize either.

A lot of people think so, but I don't. Watching a movie isn't a social experience, you sit down, keep quiet and watch whats in front of you. Sure it's more fun with friends but if theres movie I desperatley want to see I'm not gonna miss out because my friends don't have the same taste as me. Pro tip though: if you run in to someone you know tell them your friend is in the bathroom.
