While nowhere near as good as the original, it's worth playing. It's quite good and adds some well-placed humor and gadgets but is forced to be compared to the better original game.

KOTOR is well KOTOR but Kotor II is worth it just under stand that Obsidian the creators were put under a strict time table and very limited buget but lucas arts but they still made a great game just dont expect to be the master piece of Kotor.
TBH, I thought KOTOR 2 sucked. I've never played KOTOR to compare it with, but I thought the characters were pretty wooden, and the combat system was really really horrible. Horrible to the point of being pretty much unplayable. I tried to get into it, but by the time I could land on a certain planet, the first time in the game you can actually go outside and not just walk through rooms and corridors, I just gave up. I wasn't having any fun at all and it was a real chore to keep slogging through.
Sure, give it a shot. However you can tell exactly at what stage of development in which deadlines started to loom. And as others mentioned the ending(s) is utter shite, presumably due to afor mentioned looming deadlines.
It's certainly worth playing, it was great back in the day, despite the unfinished ending (there are some patches to unlock more content out there btw).But beware, the game hasn't aged well, and if you've played stuff like Mass Effect or Dragon Age, the combat, interface and graphics might be quite hard to swallow. Still, if you can get past those, it's a great game, with great story and characters
If you've seen ZP review of portal 2 or several comparisons between Fallout 3 and NV, you'll get an idea:'' Is it good? YEAH!... Is it better than the original? NO'' The first one had the story and a pourpose, the second its more like George Lucas taking back the power of the writting and drive it to its original pourpose... milking fans. As I said, it isn't bad; it has a lot of improvement in the way of how to use your crew to actually DO something beside shooting things and dying a lot... the story can be absorving, the crew its more emphatic no matter how asshole you may be, in fact you cant corrupt them to do your bidding; the upgrade system its long improved with more options and avilities; and you can spend HOURS talking to npc and it will result in prophet... I mean profit!(Damn Crysis 2)

Yes that's the mod you're looking for and you're correct on your assumption as to why it's so small. Mostly the mod just re-implements cut content and finishes other bits that were left undone due to time constraints. It's fortunate that all the content was left on the disk, voice acting and all! As a result if you haven't played the game without the mod installed you're unlikely to even tell what's been restored and what hasn't.LookingGlass said:

A quick bit of research indicating something was supposed to happen to this particular character in a location that was never implemented and which the Restored Content team have yet to have finished, though it's supposed to be in the works. Still in terms of narrative and story, even gameplay, it's actually in many ways an improvement over the original game. Gameplay-wise lightsabers aren't the be all end all of weapons and ranged can actually be extremely effective even for a jedi character if you play your cards right. Story-wise while the original Kotor stuck to the settings canon good/evil approach Kotor 2 takes a much more grey approach, telling the story more from the perspective of non-jedi in a jedi world than the titular figures themselves with interesting results. Still some people argue, perhaps even rightfully, that the whole 'shades of grey' is actually out of place in the Star Wars universe so it's a personal preference on my part.
Good game though. Such a pity it was never really finished, though props to the mod community that're working to fix that!
So basically what I'm hearing is that I should get this game on PC and not the console because of the mods. Well that sucks, because I don't have a computer capable of running it (I own a Mac laptop while I'm at school and I'm not home enough to use the PC there, which is crappy enough it couldn't run Empire at War when that game was new).

Well I installed the game, installed that mod and two others that it said it was compatible with, and started a game. Got through the prologue without it doing anything ridiculous... hooray.
Unfortunately, 30 mins into it I decided that I hated the look of my character. I should change that before I get too far. Happens to me a lot... I must have restarted Morrowind 10 times before I got out of Balmora.

i think the storyline is confusing. But the actual gameplay of kotr 2 is 10 times better than kotr one. So imo the people who boo it are the people who just play rpgs for story.

So funny you've asked, I've just recently started playing, I've done about 12-13 hours in the last few days (nearly beat it my second time through, but lost the saves!), I'm going Light side, Weapons Master, but for the novice, I'd reccomend Dark Side Consulor, using mostly force lightning, force drain and life drain, too easy if you play it that way.LookingGlass said:

Is it worth playing? It has to be one of the top ten space RPGs ever! Mass Effect meets Star Wars, it really is, so go for it! It's only 5 years old (2005, so 6ish really), I have issues on Windows 7 with the screen resolution, my Full HD screen doesn't like changing from native to run the game, but otherwise, its fantastic, can't speak for the entire story, but from what I do know - you betchya its worth playing.

Well, Is it a good/great game? Neither, its incredible, a must play.
Is it better than the original? Absolutely, improved in every way, mechanically, story wise, graphically, its outstanding, I've played the original and hated it, this, its brilliant.
Will the ending leave a sour taste in my mouth that's better to be without, assuming there won't be a KOTOR III?
I'm assuming there won't be a KOTOR 3 anytime soon, since there's that stupid MMO planned, but the ending itself will probably be brilliant, I haven't got all the way to the end so I don't know, but I've played through the 4 main planets (or 5 including the first 1/2), and they've all been good story plots, and the main plot as I know it, seems awesome - I'm hoping it won't leave a sour taste either.
EDIT: Its probably a 50-60 hour game, 20 hours in you might've beaten 3 or 4 of the 5 worlds (there's 2 intro worlds, then there's 4 worlds after that, 1 I know you have to play through in two parts). It's a truely epic game - go play it!
btw does anyone else know about the glitch with the wookie character you get if your evil(i think his names hanharr? its been a while) you can 'break his will' or something in dialouge, and he gets +2 strength and -2 int, and you get dark side points. You can do that as many times as you want due to a glitch, and if you take his intelligence below zero, it will instead become this massive number, like 3000 or something, and suddenly your wookie is capable of cracking every door, hacking every computer and solving every intelligence test for you.
I remember a quite unsatisfying ending... I was on the last planet I need to fix, and then a freaking force shield wouldn't shot down. A dozen walkthroughs, you tube vids, nothing helped. Never tried it since.
The first one crashed just before the end... I think it's because I ran Vista at the time.
So yeah my bad luck with KOTOR. The rest of the games was awesome tho... except for the freaking paragus mining station, that part is just too long. -.-

The story was amazing (better than the first ones rather standard, if good Star Wars plot), the improved the gameplay but it's rather buggy and unfinished so downloading the Restored Content mod is pretty much a must. The game's story deconstructs the themes of Star Wars, the first game, and RPG's in general.
It's buggy, the story feels cobbled together and the ending really isn't good (as the game is essentially unfinished to a degree).
However, the actual gameplay/customisation/weapon options are much greater than the first game, there's more force powers to play with and the whole light side/dark side thing has a greater impact.
So yeah I'd say if you're a kotor fan go play it!

As for your problems with the game, I can't really argue with your problems with the game's bullshit sudden cut-away cutscenes, but I don't play star wars games/watch the star wars movies for storylines that make sense or have good writing, I play them for the gameplay, so I don't care as much as long as I get good, challenging gameplay, and KOTOR is fine in that department.
