So there are countless (actually you can count them) open source games out there. Most of them are decent games that clone others. But they're all available for free!
I believe that games should go open source or at least drop their prices to a total of under 50$ (+DLCs).

Pardon my stupidity, but what exactly is open source gaming? I agree games should go cheaper though...

The way I understand open source is when people who are not part of the developer team create original content for the game.

OT: Open source is great. It adds replayability and player created content always impress the game creators.

I hope it is, and many developers are thinking the same, so perhaps it will be gaming's future...

Open Source is when the source code is free for everyone to look at and modify, constantly improving the original program, forking off their own variants etc.

Exactly! But don't confuse it with free-to-play games like BF: Heroes and Flash Games. You're not allowed to mess with their code. I.e. these games are Closed Source.
If you want to play Open Source Games just Google it.

It would be nice, but it wont happen. To many big companies with big franchises, the console market for the most part will miss out on these games. Not to mention open source means any man and his dog could edit/create code so you will have to spend hours upon hours searching though piece of shit after piece of shit to find anything good.

Sounds great, but I'm not sure if it would work for every single game, but there's definitely a market for it. Kind of like an extension of Little Big Planet type games, all about customization.

Well... Not quite, it's more like a game with a very, very open mod API, all written in some code language or other.

But why don't you think that all games could be open source?

I meant more conceptually with the little big planet thing.

Anyway, as a console gamer, it would be hard if not impossible to allow us to mess with it, especially after the removal of the other OS option. So it would work (possibly) for all PC games, but not console. If there was a way to get these games, and mods in general, on console, that would be awesome. That's probably unlikely or impossible with this generation, however.

You're absolutely right in that it won't happen with this generation of games, but maybe in two generations, or three? It depends on if "Open Source Gaming" takes root, and if it becomes popular enough, consoles will be developed that allows Open Source software.

But with today's trends with DRM, proprietary spyware and general asshattery from companies, it's not looking that way.

Also, OP: Very interesting video, thanks for linking it.

If Infinity does well, then maybe. We need an open-source game ti do incredibly well before there is even a tiny chance of it working out.

This is why Valve and Bethesda games are so well received.
And why a lot of people still play Neverwinter Nights eight years later.

When you have a game that is open to modding and custom content from the community easily, it lasts a long long time.

Possibly. Definitely not for console gamers like myself, but for PC gamers it offers limitless potential. I'm pretty sure Steam has already thought about this. Clever Steam!

it's actually the past...

Anyway, I would love it but Saurbraten crashes on my computer and mot other open source games don't ever work so I've been turned away from them in favor ofcommercial games with a modding community.

And some of these become adopted by professionals and made into major games (counter strike, team fortress are just 2)
