To that i would answer, is Pandora real because Avatar has made almost 2 billion dollars. I guess the answer was no, because if it was yes, i wouldn't be on Earth anymore, if you get my drift.

Is the character of Mario real? In the sense that he is an entity used to market video games, yes. In the sense that he is a tangible character with whom I can have interactions in meatspace, then no.
If we are discussing the video game franchise and NOT the character then the response is more or less the same. The IP and it's associated media are "real" but the world, activities and characters they portrey are not.
