I've always been fascinated by cursive handwriting. In fact, you could call it something of an obsession. It's, in my opinion, just such an aesthetically pleasing form of writing, where entire words are single, complex strokes.

However, in modern times, there are fewer and fewer practical applications for cursive; computers and print handwriting have all but phased out the cursive form, since they are easier to read and learn.

Cursive is still used heavily in letters and calligraphy, but will it soon be completely gone from the minds and dominant hands of the next generation?

What I want to know is what you Escapists think of cursive, and whether or not it will stand the test of time.

In my opinion, using hand writing of any kind will soon become obsolete all together, once those programmers figure out how to make printers internal to our computers.

Not only that, but if you want to get into language itself, shorthand (lol, omg, rofl) will soon become part of "accepted" language and even be added into the dictionary.

'Tis a sad sad world.

I was told in third grade that I would have to use cursive all throughout high school and college. I have yet to use it since the end of that year...

lies... all lies...

Damn you American education system...

I've always been a fan of cursive, and it's changed how I write forever, it's pretty visible in my writing in some of my art [http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a395/NewClassic/IMG-1.jpg].

I'd be sad to see it go, as I love cursive.

That is true. Soon English will take a critical hit.... I'm sorry, I saw your picture and had to say it.

I was taught cursive in middle school but when I entered high school and college it didn't matter how you wrote anything as long as it was legible in fact most of my instructors preferred out work to be typed out with the exception of math classes. So yea I'd say its on the way out.

Sounds like an erotic time for the Necroswanson.

Anyway, I voted that cursive will live on. I can't do it for the life of me, but with the butchering of English that even our teachers are doing, there must always be a way for it to look special, professional, and just plain spiffy.
That's an excellent point.

In a way, now that cursive is less prevalent, it's even more unique as a writing form.

You know, I think 'spiffy' is the perfect word to describe cursive... Followed closely by 'classy'..........

Well, this is a rather odd position to be in. Personally, I've always had a soft spot for cursive because it's such a smooth writing style. Very efficient, aesthetically pleasing, and all-together nice. Although, I seem to be a minority here.
How very odd...
Ah well, long live cursive.
Failing that... Good night, sweet prince.

I was taught to, but then I never used it again. I think in this day and age, where speed is valued above all else, the more elegant but slower style of cursive will be slowly fazed out, save for its role as people's signatures.

Learning cursive in elementary school teaches you to write faster in general. I'm not sure it's a very efficient method for doing that, though.
