The title says it all, folks. I am currently in a heated discussion on rather the mouse is a motion controller and I wanted your input.

Edit: My poll didn't show up. Damn you, God. I will give you this round, but next time....

Poll's broke.

I'll say no, because I'd think that a motion control implies that you're mimicking some kind of motion. A mouse movement is just as abstract as a controller joystick push, and is quite removed from wiimote waggling.

The only similarity is that both current motion controls and mice work based on vector quantities, while joystick-based controllers have a scrolling action based on the joystick input.

No. It's a motion controller in much the same way as a joystick, it needs to be in very specific circumstances to work and doesn't translate your movements literally (except in anything by Frictional Games).

It's a controller, not a motion controller. It is the same as an analog stick and some buttons.

Interesting thought. I'd probably say yes, although not in the context it's usually used these days.

Motion Control largely has the association with large movements, active gameplay, imprecise control and shitty games.

You probably couldn't convince a space alien that a wiimote and a computer mouse were very different from a interface tool, but that doesn't mean that they're actually the same thing.

It is a form of motion controller, one that senses force and direction unlike something like the Wii controller, which I am currently too tired to really delve into and you already know what it is anyway.

No. Just no. That's all that needs to be said on the matter.

Wouldn't motion control involve an accelerometer? I'm pretty sure a mouse doesn't have one.

It's either a normal controller, if you use the ones with the annoying ball that you have to clean all the time, or an...no, it is a normal controller. I think...

I would say no, but I do see where you can get the idea of motion control at.

However, a motion controller to me is something that would require more motion than just the wrist and the ability to interact with the screen.

The most is just like an analog stick of a controller, it serves basic navigation and a few other uses

How about this, a mouse is a pointing device, much like the infra red component of the Wiimote. A motion controller uses an accelerometer or camera scanning.

Mine certainly isn't, since it's a Logitech trackball mouse.

But normal ones are motion controllers because you move them to control things. Don't see no two ways about it.

Yes, the cursor becomes an extension to my hand. I pull to the right, the cursor pulls to the right.

An analog stick is manipulated with a thumb, nothing more. It doesn't require the movement of your hand and in most cases, you can't move your whole hand.
you can operate the mouse with nothing but your thumb.

Literally taking the term "motion controller" then yes it is. But then analog sticks are also motion controllers because you are moving something to control it. But it's not that simple. A motion controller is not everything that makes a movement to do something. Mouse is a necessity for PC, analog sticks are a necessity for gamepads, motion controllers are useless gimmicks.
