I don't really think it is...It doesn't have many games coming out, but it has had some great games lately. Granted, I haven't touched it recently, but that's because nothing stops the swarm of awesome DS games and my replaying of the "Ace Attorney" series. But that still doesn't mean it's dead. The PSP has gotten the original 2 Star Ocean games recently, the Disgaea spin-off "Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero?", and may soon get Disgaea 2. It will stay alive through ports and the PSP hacks. It may not have had many games come out for it recently, but a majority have been quality titles if you look at the reviews.

2009 is looking up for the PSP (compared to 2008 at least). Like Onyx notes above, there are some fairly high-end titles coming our way. The mod / emulation community continues to add after-sale value, too: having an entire Game Boy, GBA, NES, and SNES library at your disposal means the thing will always get SOME use.

Of course, if you have an unhacked PSP I imagine it spends a lot of lonely time under the bed lately.

I love my PSP, it gets more play time than my 360 and wii combined, but that's mostly because of Monster Hunter Freedom 2; and I don't think it's dead, it's just that Nintendo is unmatched in the handheld wars.

I don't know if the PSP is dead, but while were speaking of death I'm hoping that these "Is X dead" threads would just drop dead.

it was naff when they released it, that hasn't changed with ports of games for proper consoles. So yes, it is dead

Honestly if it's unhacked, it's not nearly as good as the DS and there aren't all that many games coming out (though the ones that do come out are very high quality).

Mine is hacked and I play it almost every day. I still haven't bought a DS.

As long as the homebrew community keeps going and there are GBA, SNES, Genesis, PS1, NES and Gameboy games to play, I'm happy and IMO the system is well worth buying.

And in terms of PSP games, I'm still playing LocoRoco, Patapon, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max, Crisis Core and a number of other games that can't be bought for the DS and IMO must be played. So it is still worth buying with some pretty big games on the way and a back catalogue spanning generations of consoles and hence isn't dead IMO.

The PSP still has great potential, but it has lost much of the third party game developers so you only have a few the japan based companies left making games for it. Like the xbox1, the PSP developed a reputation of being completely hacked and is very, very easy to play pirated games downloaded from just about anywhere. Some statistics from like 2007 was like there were over 2 million psps sold worldwide (both fat and slim) but whenever they release a game, only like literally one hundred copies would be sold before the game would show up in torrent sites after about an hour -- I forgot where I read that. At first, companies responded by porting pre-existing games to the PSP, so that there would be no profit loss due to development, but as the rampant pirating continued, companies jumped off the PSP, even abandoning games mid development, as they were not even recouping the manufacturing and distributing losses for any games being released! Games like Disgaea are still being made because there is strong fan base for them in Japan, where sales of games are still good, and it is just being translated to English.
I still play on my PSP, but admittedly, I play mostly the NES and arcade emulators for nostalgia reasons. If my PSP wasn't hacked, I probably wouldn't be touching at all.
Are the pirates to blame for the PSP going down? Not sure... but that argument is for another thread.. :O

It's not dead per se, but it is certainly lacking in common signs of life. I personally LOVED my PSP in a very general way but the control causes terrible hand pains in most any game. If they could sort out button placement (and that horrible thumb nub thingie) to make it comfortable to hold for more than a few minutes at a stretch it would see far more use. As it stands, I generally stick to playing a few games on my DS, since I so rarely have an opportunity to break out handhelds.

Quoted for truth.

I'm writing a homebrew FF7 psp game in C thought atm, so i hope the psp will not die in the next year or so, cause it's kinda hard to get used to psp-programming.

I have about as many official games for the PSP as I have for the DS, and every one of them is a masterpiece. Exit, Patapon, Loco Roco, even their remake of lemmings satisfies a need that I have had for a long time. It actually has better puzzle games than the DS, namely Crush and Exit, though the DS has better adventure games (Phoenix Wright series, Hotel Dusk). Actually, I don't think the PSP has any adventure type games. I will say, though, that the DS has the only truly unique and original RPG on either system, that being The World Ends With You, since I'm not counting any of the remakes for either system, as much as I love Chrono Trigger and Disgaea. The one thing that gets a lot of my money for the PSP though is compilations and remakes. I got the Gradius compilation, a compilation with a bunch of my favorite genesis games on it (Desert Strike anyone?), of course I mentioned Lemmings and Disgaea already... I think it's still in good shape and can still be used to great effect. But, that's just me.

I would love a PSP to play Final Fantasy Crisis Core and Dissidia, as well as the God of War title (among others). I do recall reading that Sony is developing a PSP2, although I'm not sure if this is even in development or even from a reputable source.

PSP could have been so much better. I think they should have went into do something new like the DS, instead of a better version of Gameboy Advanced.
