Poll: is the wii just hype? or can it really be good for long term use?

It's not a fad and it's not really good. It's another potentially good console, this time wrecked by a slew of horrible third-party games that are blatently aimed at children. However, the few gems, Metroid Prime 3, Resi 4 are a lot more immersive than, say, Halo 3 and Resi 4 on other platforms. Not to say it wasn't a great game already.

Having said all that, the only times I've played it in the last year is for a 3 hearts run of Twilight Princess and to finish Mercs on Resi 4. Ahaha.

Well mine is sitting unused too, but then I'm not using any of my consoles right now; I'm mostly playing PC games. As for the Wii, I still think it has potential but Nintendo and the various 3rd parties aren't making proper use of the Wii's innovative new control system.
For example, instead of porting Myst to the DS, they should've ported it to the Wii so we could have a cursor and not have to go tapping things at random. Also I think the Wii could be good for RTSes which I understand are traditionally unintuitive on consoles (never played one on a console), because the Wii remote could function in a similar fashion to a mouse.

This. The Wii has more than proved itself as a gaming platform. Gamers are just too difficult to please. Look at the PS2. Most of the PS2's catalog are exactly the same games that the Wii gets abuse for having. The Wii is this gens PS2, thus it is getting shovel-ware. There are many games out for the Wii that hardcore gamers would love if they would at least try them.

The Wiimote has already proven itself. Nintendo will keep motion-sensing and MSFT and SONY are adapting it into the PS3 and 360. Like it or not, Nintendo struck a gold mine.

Considering how I've had my Wii since launch and I'm still getting some great use out of it, I'd say it's definitely good for long-term use.

Enough about the wii already, ZP goes on a rant and suddenly everyone is yahtzee. Its just another console, some people like it some dont.
Just another typical Wednesday: Yahtzee uploads another one of his rants onto the site, and people start piggybacking off his words.

I got a Wii, it's fun, but after a while it gets boring.......
Just like the PS3, XBox, PS2, Gamecube, SNES, NES, Amiga, Atari, sega genesis, gameboy pocket, etc....

Also, the poll is silly.

Its good for drunken parties. That's it.

Edit: I'll admit its also good keeping small children occupied for long stretches of time (makes looking after my little brother very easy)

Woo! Someone who agrees with me! I like Yahtzee and all, he's very funny, but people don't have to believe everything he says.

I'm sure it could be good long-term fun for some people. It wasn't for me, I got bored of it within a couple of weeks, but it'd be a bit silly to generalise for the entire population based on my experience.

As one of those people who does get long-term use out of it, I admire your show of uncommon good sense.

How long is long term use? 5 yearss? Sure it will be around that long, likely. But they are already working on a HD version of the Wii so who knows when that will come out. It is like asking years ago is the Ps1 any good, yeah and it had a good run, but eventually something better will come out. It's funny, Wii is trying to go HD, at the same type Sony and MS scramble to make Wiimotes heh.

Its the best console ever!
...For the friend that lives in your dorm to have.

Really, it has some good titles, and its just a matter if a the relatively small number of worthwhile games are good enough for you to spend the money.

I have a wii and I only ever play it when I get a new, good game. The majority of games for the wii are just the same simple minigames or games designed for kids. There are a few games that keep the console alive for hardcore gamers, though and that is the only reason that the wii still retains a few hardcore gamer fans. If you're a casual gamer, then it is definitely good for long-term use, but if you're a hardcore gamer, its only used sporadically, when new, decent games come out. It you're a hardcore gamer, and you're deciding what 1 console to buy, don't make it the Wii, though. it does some games better than other consoles can, but most games are better on other consoles.

It's good for some people, but me? I can't see much use in it. Not many games I want from it, and Nintendo refuses to bring out something that piques my interest.

(and so help me if someone says anything from their first party lineup)

I will say this once more. Videogames must have an influx of new blood, current gamers will go away eventually. The x-box 360 and PS3 don't cater to new gamers, they cater to gamers who are already gamers. The Wii caters to non-gamers and draws in people to become gamers. Therefor, the wii is the only system bringing in vital new blood. Therefor it is good. It's impressive number for sales already say that it is here to stay for the long term. If its hype then gameing as a whole is less then hype. It's not right for everyone, but nothing in the world is.
