It seems that pretty much every movie is being made in 3D now. I mean there's Step Up 3D. Why? In fact why is there more than one. But back to my point I haven't watched any of the new 3D movies because they usually don't add anything to the movie except for some gimmicks to show of the 3D. Is there going to be a point to having 3D or is it just going to be a gimmick?

Sales. People want to sell stuffs, so they go with what's popular. The only real problem with it right now is the fact that movies haven't had enough notice to be filmed specifically in 3D so they're just converting, so it's nothing fancy. In time movies will be filmed with proper 3D technology, like Avatar, and it will actually add something to it.

And Step Up isn't really a good example of this. Step Up is a gimmick franchise.

I haven't watched a single 3D movie and I don't plan to, when I first saw a 3D television I looked at it and wondered "what the hell is the point of paying £900+ for the ability to watch TV in 3D" I then promptly walked out of the shop and haven't been near a 3D TV since.

Another good example of over-used 3D is with Nintendo's newly announced '3DS' I heard they would be re-releasing Ocarina of Time (My favourite N64 game) and was kind of intrigued, however yesterday I learned that they would be changing the Water temple around slightly (probably) because kids found it too hard, and by kids I mean kids these days not the 90's kids. If they change that temple (or anything else about the game) I will personally never buy a game from them again, I already dislike the Wii, Twilight Princess was nothing special and Skyward Sword looks rubbish.

In cinema's I would say 3D is being overused, mainly as a way to get more money out of a franchise.

I was using Step Up as an example exactly because its a gimmick. There's no reason for it to have 3D.

Yes.... damn Avatar...

It's so annoying, how 3-D has become the only selling point in movies now.

That's the thing though. Step Up, without the 3D, is a gimmick. Using Toy Story 3 as an example would have been more apt, because there's a certain professional integrity when it comes to Pixar. And the 3D in Toy Story 3 was gimmicky, it didn't add anything and it could be ignored when you got really engrossed in the movie.

I have no problem with movies that are designed to be in 3D from conception (Step Up 3D was in fact designed that way), but it irritates me when they take a movie that was filmed in 2D and changed it after the fact to add in 3D effects just so they can get a few more dollars out of the wallet. Alice in Wonderland is an example. Perfectly decent movie in 2D, but they had to jump on the bandwagon and release a 3D version as well. Sad.

3D is fine if you want cheap gimmickry (not including the 3DS), but it's definitely not the next step in entertainment or whatever.
