Today at school, a friend of mine offered to swap my iPod Nano (4th gen, about 1.5 years old, 8gb) for his iPod Mini (unknown gen, about 3.5 years old, 4gb) because he was about to go on a 2-week holiday and was going to buy a new iPod while he was there anyways, so the verdict is that I lose a feature or two and 4gb worth of capacity, and he saves about 300 NZ dollars.
My mum thought this was a completely ridiculous thing to do, and she's gotten completely paranoid about it potentially breaking. To be honest, one of the reasons I'm making this thread is so I can show her the results later, because I'm pretty certain on how it's going to go.

EDIT: Sorry to all those who misunderstood, the idea was that he wouldn't have to pay $300 for a new one, he could just take mine instead. Also, mum ended up having a massive spaz and now I have to take it back at school tomorrow D:

Well, it sounds like a bad deal for you, but I guess if you wanted to do something nice for your friend then... well, alls i'm saying is he must be a pretty good friend. Or make really convincing arguments.

I am not sure I get what is going on, why are you swapping ipods when he is just going to buy a new one on this vacation? Or there must be something I am just missing for some reason.

Now, friendship is a good thing, and helping out your friends is a good thing as well, but you don't just do a trade like this.

There are plenty of times where you can help him out in other situations without losing on it. I say wait for a time like that.

So that he doesn't have to buy a new one.

And guys, this guy is a good friend of mine, and $300 is alot to 14-year-olds. I'm willing to lose a bit of space I hardly even USE if a friend of mine saves $300.

And it turns out it has all the same features save a different game. It's basically the same.

Oh okay, I get it now, I thought you guys were going to swap ipods, and he was going to get another one, it doesn't sound weird to me anymore. It is actually a really cool thing you are doing, good for you.

I'm confused, the propositions don't seem to follow. How is he going to save 300 dollars from swapping, unless he's not planning on buying the iPod anymore? Unless the actual situation is "lets switch iPods because I want a newer one, and you can save me money by switching with me."

I'm confuzled. Is he just borrowing it until he gets his new one, or does he want to permaswap?

If he's just trading it so he has more room for his vacation and is planning on trading it back later I'd say go for it. If you trust him with stuff of course. Hell I've let friends of mine borrow all sorts of more expensive things: laptop, iPod Touch, DS, car.

If he wants to permaswap, sounds like your getting screwed in the deal but if your fine with that then you're fine with that, I suppose.

I say you both should scrap em and buy a good iPod. ie the ones that are as big as your palm. Nanos and shuffles and minis, bah. I dont think they make the one I have anymore though...it was too good. 80gb video one.

Have him pay you 100 bucks and its a deal.

He saves, gets a much better ipod, you get a slightly shittier ipod, but 100 bucks.

Everybody wins.

Hey man, if you want to swap then go ahead. I wouldn't. But I don't think your mother should be freaking out about this. Just make your own decisions and, if it turns out badly, you'll have learned something.

Well, alot of people didn't seem to get what I was saying, the idea was that he would swap with me so that he wouldn't have to pay heaps of money on a new one. I hardly even use 4gb on my one anyways, too.

And of course, mum had a massive spaz and now I have to swap back at school tomorrow >:O

Hmm so let me get this right, You swapped a newer ipod for an older ipod to a friend whos too cheep to buy a new ipod, that has only two gigs of mem for a Two week trip (Because everyone knows that going on a vacation involves copious amount of music listening). And now your moms angry that you traded your ipod which, i assume she bought for you, for an inferior model? Amirite?
