So, I have a bit of a theory concerning the Final Fantasy franchise. It seems that, for most people, whatever Final Fantasy was their first is their favorite. I'd like to test this theory.

I know that for myself, this is the case. FFX was my first, and is my favorite.

So, what was your first Final Fantasy, and is it your favorite?
Same here. This game is fantastic in absolutely every aspect (except for main characters looks, obviously).

My fist FF was XIII, and its my favourite by default, after playing that shit I don't think I want anything else to do with the franchise.

I'll be over here with my RTS's, FPS's and Space/flight simulators, thanks

You know, I still think its true though, due to that... thing... I'll never play another FF. I don't care how good of a game you think VII or X is, I'm not playing it.

But I now understand why the PS2 freaks who got a Xbox 360 and played Halo 3 though I was an idiot for liking the lore of the franchise. Those of us who played Halo CE first know.

and just off topic for a second, I'm sure some one has already given this answer but, can some one explain to me why each FF game is set in a different world (Aside from a few things I.E. gill being the currency), having a different big bad, different characters, and often different game mechanics and is still part of the same franchise?

Yes, yes it was. FFVIII for me. I was unfamiliar with FF games when I first got my hands on that game. I played it for a while and named it "Pokemon for grown-ups" (I also wasn't familiar with terms like RPGs and stuff). Soon, I came to like it and I fell in love with the story, graphics, music, characters and everything else. So once I finished it, I proceeded to play other FFs available at the time. Some I like better than others.

I like FF in this order:

VIII
IX
X
XII
X-2
VII

I haven't finished XIII or XIII-2, I never played the MMO ones, I'm still in the process of playing I through VI, although I'm not liking them a lot so far.

And yeah, I don't get why FFVIII is kinda underrated as compared to other FFs. To quote a conversation, I had with a friend of mine:

Me: I love FFVIII.
Friend: I don't. It was complicated.
Me: I thought it was easy. I was 14 at the time and I got every single thing done in that game.
Friend: Was that your first FF game ever?
Me: Yes.
Friend: That's why.

PS: It seems most people like IX a lot so...why don't we get a remake of that?! Or a prequel?! Or even a sequel?! It seems only ONE game gets all the attention nowadays. *Cough*
8 had the most annoying combat system of them all. Squall should be happy that his character redeems itself in the kingdom hearts and dissidia series. Some FF7 characters wish they aged well in their appearances in later games.

although it had one of the best mini games (card game)

The reverse actually. I came late to Final Fantasy (no consoles in my house growing up), and unfortunately, randomly started with FFX-2 (a friend had a copy).

Bad idea.

Since then, I've played many other FF games, and I rather like FFIII, but the first one I played was one I wouldn't touch with a barge pole again!

Yeah, I loved Triple Triad. It just wasn't the same in FFIX.

I guess that's what my friend was getting at when he asked me all that. Because I had never played any other FF and I was kinda new to RPGs and eager to learn and was so enamorated with the game, I probably didn't care that it was complicated at all. In fact, I got so used to it, it was like second nature to me. And for some reason, I've never been able to bring myself to care about tweaking every single aspect of the combat system with other FF games. Dunno why.

My first game in the series was Final Fantasy X, while my favorite game in the series(and of all time) is Final Fantasy X-2.
*Jumps on your back*

Yes! Thank goodness, I thought I'd be alone in this.

Through... contrived means, FFX-2 was the first Final Fantasy game I played, and my favourite in the series.

I haven't played a lot of Final Fantasies, just 1, 7, 10, 10-2, 13, 13-2, one of the Tactics (I think), but X-2 is my favourite.

I enjoyed the silliness.
I enjoyed the random songs and dancing.
I LOVED the combat system: It's the best one I've seen implemented.

So yeah...

I played VIII, then VII, then IX, then I can't remember the order but VI, V, IV, X, X-2 etc were all in there somewhere.

I liked VIII more than VII when I first played them, but now I tend to like VII more, despite its glitches and issues.

But my favourite Final Fantasy is the underdog - IX.

Yes, FFX was the first one I played and is still my favorite of all I've played (pretty much 9 to 12). Though I still believe that if they made a FF with a combat system fairly close to the one in X-2 (I don't count XIII as 'close enough') that one may instantly become my favorite.

Yeah my first one was the original Final Fantasy... and kind of liked the older Final Fantasy games... but the only 3D one that I honestly liked was 12 which is mah favorite... because you know... engaging gameplay... and great customization options...<.<

Nope. First title I played was Final Fantasy VII, and as great of a time as I had with it, Final Fantasy Tactics remains my favorite FF game.

No. My first FF was X-2. I don't think I need to explain why that one isn't my favorite. xP
My favorite FF is XII wich I still play every now and again.

First was the GBA remake of 1/2 (Dawn of Souls), but since then played 3, 4 and 6 on DS/GBA and 7 on the PSP (as a PSONE classic) and neither 1 or 2 is my fave... I can't decide between 3 and 4, 3 better in game play and 4 better story imo.

My first was one of the Crystal Chronicles and my favorite is 13. Even if it does occasionally kick me in the balls.

My first FF game was FFX and my opinion of that game is pretty much a dead-on match with Spoony's, that the combat system is very clear about who will go when, the magic system is done well and the boss battles are great but EVERYTHING else about the game is terrible, from the story to the amount of enemy re-use to the sheer ball-busting Guide Dangit moments. And that's ignoring the fact that the last boss in the story is a joke (I couldn't be arsed with the arena, got to bored of grinding monsters).

My favourite FF is FF3, but is by no means perfect. I've gone on about it before but the job system is rather obtuse, you can end up limiting your maximum possible hp if a character sticks to a fragile class like a White Mage, the changes in the game engine from the NES version can potentially make bosses instakill a party member with full health and the final section of the game is a marathon S&M section that can last for hours with NO saving.

But I still enjoyed the hell out of it.

CAPTCHA: skid row. Shame I wasn't talking about PC gaming.

I will say yes, because the first Final Fantasy game that I played was X. I was unaware that X meant 10, so I assumed that it was a new franchise or a remake of a older gen game. When I realized that there where other games in the series, I decided to try them out. Without a doubt, Final Fantasy X is by far, my favorite (closely followed by Final Fantasy Tactics A2).
