It's now October. Everyone be prepared for women to post things that sound like penis sizes but aren't, all in an effort to "raise awareness for breast cancer." Here's the problem I have with that train: WE'RE ALREADY AWARE THAT YOU ARE NOT POSTING PENIS SIZES. And that is a problem. You see, if we already know you are posting "penis" sizes that aren't penis sizes, then we're already aware of breast cancer. You need to hit a new demographic.

I propose the following solution: start campaigns to raise awareness of breast cancer in third world countries. Somalia is a good one. You can post things that sound like weapon models, locations of tourist vessels that are lightly guarded, and when the next UN food shipment arrives. But the joke is on the warlords, because when they get there they will be all "Oh, it was about breast cancer! I should donate some money to that cause."

Oh. Wait.

-

Well it is breast cancer awareness month, so if you have a Facebook, be prepared to witness teenagers and trendy older women to post things that sound like penis sizes, but aren't. This is SUPPOSED to raise awareness for breast cancer.

I've had a problem with this "awareness" campaign for some time. I think it actually distracts from an otherwise worthy cause because only people who are actually in on the joke get it. Which means zero awareness has been raised. The latest permutation of this has been to post the length of a woman's foot, and then something like "5 minutes". I've not figured out exactly what the time period is supposed to mean, but that is what I'm talking about. I'm more interested in figuring out what that part is supposed to be rather than doing anything to help those with breast cancer.

I think it would be a much better idea to actually say something about breast cancer than to post inane things about your shoe size when dealing with a disease that can, you know, kill people.

So, Escapist, what do you think? Do you think that this campaign has any justification, do you think it helps the cause in any way, and if someone can please explain what the hell the "5 minutes" has to do with anything I would greatly appreciate it.

Now that i have your attention , i would like to talk to you about breast cancer .

This is basically what it boiles down to . They say something that will catch peoples attention and then talk about what they really want to talk about . It's the oldest trick in the book. It called false avertisement . Also i hope i don't get a warning for my post , i was trying to prove a point . I'm sure everyone has seen that before . I am not offering free sex at all . The mods know that right? Right?

Edit: also i'd like to meet the person who isn't aware of breast cancer . Awarness months are just a ploy to get people to donate money .

I think that's the point the OP is missing. At this point it's all about the Benjamin's. Every October all your favorite products turn pink and commercials will tell you how you HAVE to buy this yogurt/energy drink/toilet paper because it's pink, and part of the proceeds go to research.

All of those things are perfectly legitimate ways to raise awareness because they actually DO something for the cause.

Nothing about the shoe size thing makes me want to donate money. It confuses those few men not in the know, and makes them feel idiotic. /endcontroversythatisn'tthere

However! I've come to the conclusion that the point of the campaign may have been to get people talking about how ineffective it is, so that in doing so, breast cancer awareness spreads. It may not be a perfect plan, but damn if it's not ingenious.

It's to get people talking about it.

When they did it with people's bra colour, a lot of people were asking about the status and breast cancer comes up for discussion.

This time it's your shoe size and the amount of time it takes you to do your hair in the morning.

Sure, it's silly but there're so many statuses and ads about cancer anyway, it's trying to bring a bit of fun into it. It's a smaller version of a fun run or something, make people have a bit of a laugh while raising awareness. Obviously everyone knows about breast cancer, it's about bringing it to the table again, hopefully encouraging a handful of people to donate. Isn't that justification enough?

Yes, we should scrap a small attempt to shed light on an important cause because some men apparently get upset and confused about Facebook statuses they don't quite understand.

Of course, it's an evil ploy that tries to get people to voluntarily donate any spare change they have to cancer research.

I swear, some people on this site will get up in arms about anything. What's this? Someone having fun doing something I'm not directly involved in? NOT ON MY WATCH!

What you think it isn't . So young , so naive . If it wasn't we wouldn't need an awarness month . Seriously i wanna meet the guy who isn't already aware of breast cancer and their foundations .

Of course people are aware of breast cancer but it's about bringing it up for discussion and reminding people.
Everyone knows there are children starving in the world but people need to be reminded in order for charities to raise money.

Of course it's justified. It certainly helps to raise awareness. Now, whether they've chosen the best way of doing that or not I don't know, perhaps it should be a bit more obvious but as a general rule if you put anything sex related in a post, especially if you are a woman (especially if she appear to be saying "I do not care how large or small your penis is"), people are going to read it.

Except they usually forget about the "and then we discuss breast cancer" bit, so it boils down to a whole load of inappropriate jokes, a few sniggers, and an undeserved feeling of doing something to help cancer research.

I think we should totally use this as an excuse if we're ever caught for something like gross indecency. When you get dragged before the courts all you have to do is shout "I did it to raise awareness for testicular cancer. TESTICULAR CANCER!!!" While cupping your junk and pelvic thrusting the judge. You'll get incarcerated for sure, but think of the stories they'll tell!

I like your thinking.

Me: *gets pulled over for speeding*
Cop: Sir, do you know how fast you were going?
Me: I did it for testicular cancer.
Cop: What?
Me: Yeah, I need to rise awareness. Do you know how horrible it is to have your balls cut off? You better go donate now.
Cop: Get out.

And no speeding ticket!

Is there anyone in this country who isn't aware of the fact that breast cancer is a thing? Anyone at all? Then cut it the fuck out. Instead of spending all this money to advertise your fresh coat of pink paint on things that aren't the least bit impacted by it hows about you just give that money to researchers or survivors in need of financial aid or absolutely anything else that might be of some use to someone.

Yeah I saw team YOLO and the people who's Ask.fm pages I love to troll posting this stuff. Its the same issue I had with KONY your Facebook status means NOTHING, it achieves nothing if you want to help get off your ass and do something good instead of feeling like a hero for re-posting that stuff.

I must not have any imagination, but how exactly does one post something that appears to be a penis size but is not actually a penis size? When I read "12 inches, 10 minutes", I won't think about penises. Nor will I think about breast cancer. It will just appear to be yet another Facebook status that fails to provide any context. Best case scenario: a lot of people post these weird, seemingly meaningless numbers and I might someone about why they're posting it, to which they'll reply "because breast cancer is a thing". Shocking! But why not just post that then? That seems like it will work way better, because you remove the requirement that people know what you're retarded status update means.

Also, what exactly is the connection between (the size of) penises and breast cancer? Wouldn't it make more sense to do something breast- and/or cancer-related?

Well I suppose we could ship over a load of really hot models to Somalia in an attempt to educate the populace there?

I didn't know that they were doing this measurement thing, and I doubt most people will, so it's been successful in raising my awareness. Awareness needs to be a continuous education program as well.
