Recently I was playing Age of Empires II with a good friend, and after a particularly annoying footmen (or Champion) rush, we got annoyed and decided to enable cheats (specifically resource cheats), after four hours of intense competition by Britons finally won out, and that got me thinking...

Maybe it's more fun to activate cheats, especially in the RTS world. I think it introduces a new angle, where you can focus entirely on military or development. But what does the Escapist think?

Sometimes.

It really depends on the game and the cheat being used.

For me, i tend to have a lot more fun without cheats.

Only if you're playing for fun and not for the sole purpose of winning. I could see the appeal in playing with a few cheats on every now and again, though constantly using cheats would be bound to get boring.

Yes it is really fun like a time when I activated all of the cheats in GTA san andrasis it was fun rideing a jetpack mowing down crowds of people knowing I couldn't die.

The Grand Theft Auto games were always fun to cheat in, spawn yourself an armoury and a fast car and go nuts! Fallout 3 and Oblivion can also be fun for a bit if you spawn yourself a big weapon and go smash stuff, but that gets old after a while.

I've never used cheats in RTSs since... well, Age Of Empires actually (the car cheat and the 'Aegis' cheat so your trebuchets build instantly) since I find the fun of an RTS to be building up great resource chains that your military can never drain.

It is fun to activate cheats every once in a while, particularly if a game is getting frustrating, but generally I prefer to play without the use of cheats.

GTA, The Sims, Age of Empires and Football Manager are just 4 games I can think of now that are more fun with cheats.

Depends on the game.

I think, for games like Final Fantasy, half the fun is grinding, levelling, collecting items and upgrading weapons: having all that from the get-go makes the game entirely pointless.

However, I used to use cheats on GTAIII because it was fun to just dick around without a wanted level (also I was a terrible driver and used to kill more old ladies than a person rightly should...)

Some cheats in some games make things hilarious. (I'm not talking about big head cheats or stuff like that, I mean like crzy ragdoll or increased physics damage or something like that)

Generally though I think most cheat codes are things like unlimited ammo or unlimited health, which certainly make it easier, and allow you in games like Stranglehold to rack up stupid levels of combos, but that's not really why I play, and I can achieve the same experience by playing on easy anyway.

I seriously don't think I ever played Age of Empires 2 without cheat.Except when I tried to beat the campaign.
As long you play for fun and not to win it's ok. As long it's not in multiplayer, where it may ruin for someone else.

when i completed GTA, i then put in the cheats but not the ammo and money really! the stupid ones that make u run fast or slow things down or low gravity etc.. i kno its saft but was kinda comical for a brief period of time...

i think if u got a game ur finding difficult and just want end game then a lil cheat can help u on ur way!

overall stupid cheats r the best..

Meh, I dont really like cheats... I only used to put cheats in GTA games... like lowering gravity and making cars glide... that was fun. Nothing that would make the game super easy and certainly no cheating in multiplayer.

Oh, except in Conkers BFD. Putting in those codes to unlock characters for the multiplayer, you didnt actually get an advantage.

But yeah, I cant stand people who use cheap tactics or "n00b" tactics that dont take skill... like spawn raping, thats the thing I hate more than anything and yet so many people seem to do it now. So as soon as I see someone spawn raping I tell everyone on my team that I am leaving the game because I dont play with spawn rapists and I advise you to do the same.

If you're just messing around, cheats can be great. Some games can be totally ruined by cheats though. Imagine a survival-horror game with a God-mode cheat. What would be the fun in that? Pretty much any competitive game (or any game you're playing 'seriously', at least) would be ruined if you used cheats as well.
