Are you kidding me? That Was one of the few Xbox games I still play now. The story, soundtrack, the style and the combat system were awesome. When I signed up for the Cerberus Network on EA I noticed they still had the old Jade Empire icons for avatar's so I'm hopeing they didn't forget the series and the idea of a sequal may pop up.

Hell I'll even take a remake!

I never really liked it when I first tried it, I wasn't really an RPG fan back then. I want to go back and try it again, I just need to find a copy somewhere.
It's up on the Xbox Live Arcade.
And it's not only my favorite Bioware game, but my 7th favorite game of all time (and yes, I've played ME2, but Jade Empire is still my favorite bioware).
Yeah, but I don't have an Xbox.
Turns out that its on Steam anyway, so I may just get it there.

What were your thoughts on Jade Empire?

Personally, I loved it. Bioware's best game, imo. From the combat, to the characters, to the original setting of Chinese mythology.

I still think that Bioware's WORST was Sonic Chronicles. It was still a decent game, though.
They blew it for me. The game was Ok however.
I like Chinese mythology, fox spirits tales especially. Only area in the game which gave me the right feel was Great Southern Forest and Spirit Monk Temple before the siege, the rest was meh. Perhaps I expected too much from it.

I'd say it's probably among the 'worst' of BW's games, but that said, it's still a fun, engaging game despite the rather broken combat system.

I don't get it, why cRPGs use the same combat system as paper-pen RPGs. It worked fine for DnD, but in a virtual world I WANT TO ROLEPLAY A GODDAMN KENSHIRO, especially that Jade Empire had already proven that it would work great.

I was going to tell you not to use so many damn caps, but then I read what you wrote and...

It precisely sums up my main problem with Dragon Age and NWN. It also explains why I think the Mass Effect series has more of a future than DA.

However, OT: I didn't like Jade Empire much for personal reasons but thought it was a good effort overall. The reason why I didn't enjoy it is that I grew up in China and spent a lot of time exposed to all the ancient Chinese tropes that were used in Jade Empire. While those cliches might have seemed fresh to a Western audience unfamiliar with Chinese culture, for me it was just a rehashing (and a bad one) of stuff on TV (dammit, the Chinese love their historical dramas) and novels my father made me read (try reading the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and not giving up because of the glut of characters).

The combat was fun though, although a complete cakewalk after you learn the style that stuns enemies. The story had an awesome twist that I somehow didn't see coming. The one thing that directly pissed me off was the top-down space-invaderish flying sequences between missions. I'm so glad Bioware has stopped doing those sorts of minigames, the man-the-turrets sequences in KOTOR almost made me throw my laptop out the window.

To be fair, I think I played through Jade Empire and KOTOR in... 2007? I got my laptop in mid-2007, my old-desktop I had couldn't even play KOTOR because it had an Intel integrated graphics chip. But, it could play Morrowind on around 10FPS, which was fine for me, just had to stare at the ground while running when outdoors.

So, yeah...

Btw, did Bioware actually develop Sonic Chronicles or did they just put their stamp on it? It doesn't sound like they would do themselves.

great game, right up until you learned how to morph into the jade golem thingy, or - as I like to call it the ceramic tower of death. from that point on the combat just lost its edge. it wasn't fun anymore. but up until then a great game.

I got it in December during the steam sale, and I can honestly say that it feels like a prototype BioWare game. It's probably due to the fact that I played Mass Effect first, but Jade Empire had a lot of problems that turned me off from getting past the dam-level (which I know is not very far into the game). I did not like the combat, easy as it was, and there seems to be a lack of dialog and character interactions that make BioWare games great. You can only have one follower and they rarely say anything, and they speak in a strange stilted manner. The Plot is also slow to develop and I can't say I care much for my starting character. Environments seem.... empty. I know that it was released back in 2005, though, so I can't complain about the graphics, which were good for the time.

Maybe it's just because it seems like a less realized world than Mass Effect or Dragon Age. Or maybe it's because I really, really can't stand the combat.

It's not a bad game. I just can't relate to the characters or the world. Despite being half Chinese, I never felt much attachment to ancient china (although Jade Empire is more of an amalgamation of all ancient asian cultures).

to me the live action combat improved it lengths and measures for me, undoubtably one of their best, KOTOR is their best though. I really want the sequel...NOW

I liked it a lot, being a sucker for martial arts stories and all. It's not Bioware's best, but it's Bioware's standard: interesting plot, vivid characters, good dialogues and voice-acting. I bought it only recently so I wasn't very impressed graphics-wise, but JE is a solid game overall.
