hmmmm You could have hallucinations of some sort...

Like the main character walks into a room, sees a man hanging from a noose with a note attached to him. Upon reaching the body to read the note, the man suddenly comes to life and starts shaking violently...

That would scare the crap out of me.
Yes I like the hallucinations idea, maybe there would be somthing on the ship that would make everyone hallucinate and experience past events (This is how a lot of the backstory could be told) thus drving them out of their minds and leading to violence.

Here's some more ideas. Patrick murders his father (Who owns the Ocean Liner company that the Odysseus belongs to) there is a long drawn-out trial and Patrick gets off by a technicality. A few months later his brother sends him a letter and a ticket for the Odysseus telling him to meet him on the boat so he can live in New York with him. Patrick meets his brother on the boat and he says things like "Oh I know you're innocent you're my brother!" then some crazy shit happens where violence erupts and Patrick and his brother are separated. Patrick is trying to find his brother all the while being tormented by horrific hallucinations and a mysterious man who communicates with him via the intercom system (Or a radio like in Bioshock).

What I want to know is: What would be the crazy shit that would go down that would send the ship into chaos? ideas?

He...gets to New York? And then something happens there? Because anything is 100 times better when it happens in New York?
I want the ship to never get there for one reason or another. I had the idea that he was going to live with his brother who is a successful something or other. The boat gets jacked by some people and either the whole game will take place on the ocean liner (It would be huge!!) or it will be jacked and crashed into some unknown place between
Ireland and New York (Like an island or something). Also I want his brother to turn out to be the antagonist (Not necessarily a villan).

I also wanted to make Patrick an engineer so you can customize weapons with various items you find and so he can repair......things.
How could the brother be the antagonist if they never make it to New York?

And there are no islands between Ireland and New York. Unless the ship for some reason goes the other way...and hits England a few minutes later. Might take a bit longer than a few minutes.

Well, Newfoundland's an island, but I don't think that's what you meant. That's a silly island.
I have an idea. Patrick's brother is only his half-brother, and is working for another family. Patrick boards the ocean liner, but finds that the other family are waiting for him. Knowing that he must work for his own safety, and that of the crew members, he recruits members of the ocean liner to fight for him, to save them and Patrick. The RP would end with them reaching New York. It's a fight for survival, I could take this further, much much further, but I'm very busy.
This isn't really an RP I'm just asking for ideas for a story I hope to actually write.....someday. I like your suggestions but when you say "Family" do you mean like the mafia? Or just a family?.

A Kraken emerging from the ocean to alert Patrick about coming trouble. Then it all goes tits up with little to no explanation.

I had this idea for the plot of a game but I'm missing huge chunks and I hoped the randomness of the internet would give me some good ideas. Type anything you want as long as it's constructive, you can continue from where I started or just throw out random ideas.

The only thing I have is the main character is living in 1932 Ireland and is named Patrick and he boards an ocean liner, the S.S. Odysseus, bound for New York......

What happens next?
Odysseus..?

Methinks, some kind of modern day Odyssey. How it would work, I have no idea...

Good suggestion.

I called it the Odysseus because it gets lost at sea like the hero of the same name, but unlike Odysseus Patrick will never find his way home.

His name shall be Steven the Friendly Kraken!

I'm not going for a mythological thing but the Kraken kinda ties in with the Odysseus thing maybe one of the weapons could be called "The Kraken" or something.

I'm thinking of adding some sort of Sci-fi element like a strange sea plant of some sort that grows on the ship and makes people insane...somehow. Thoughts?

Sounds good, but give a reason for the plant, or else it will just seem random and kind of stupid.

Hey man. No internet for ages, so only just got your message. What kind of setting are you looking for? Is this real world, with a plot and characters that could take place in real life 1930s? Or is it steampunk, only later than Victorian, with a more loose basis on how things work? Or is it more towards the Cthulhu mythos with the possibility for gods, demons, etc? I've written a few things here and there and am currently working on my own universe for a game setting (been chipping at it for 10 years now!) and need more info on what kind of setting you have, and what kind of things you want people to be able to do.

Well no mythology of any kind (Unless it's in one of the hallucinations but I think that would just confuse people) based in pseudo-realistic 1930-1935, I'm going to take a lot of artistic liberties to make the setting more interesting. It's definetley not going to be a gun-metal grey game, it will be very artsy looking but not over-the-top cartooney. Maybe a bit of steampunk to add a bit of style but not too much, somewhat like an alternative history because the size of the ocean liner I'm going for will be HUGE (Think Queen Mary 2) but that's the only thing that's 'alternate' about the history really. I was thinking the enemies would be some sort of sea creatures that make their way onto the ship while the main character is sleeping and he wakes up to find the ship's lower decks covered in strange phosphorescent seaweed-like plants and crawling with said creatures. The 'seaweed' would give off some pheromone or something that would make the main character and the other passengers/crew hallucinate making them enemies also. I've got the weapons down no-problem so no worries there (Upgradable, each can only have two upgrades at one time but there are about ten upgrades for each, and melee weapons Condemned 2 style). There's a lot more I have in my head (Come to think of it I should write some of this crap down) but I don't want to put you into a text-induced coma.

Any feedback?

While he's on the boat, Zombies attack the world!
He arrives in new york, and him and the other passengers on the boat have to fight off the hoard, and survive.

Just wondering, how would the storyline be delivered?

Half-Life style, where you're still given free command of the character.

Halo style, where it goes to a cut-scene.

Or Bioshock style, where control of the character is somewhat limited during certain scenes, but storyline is also given through the environment?

Well it would be delivered in many ways, one through Bioshock-like communications via radio with crewmembers and in fully-playable hallucinations (None of that ghost crap). Maybe a few cutscenes for the more dramatic parts.

On another note I think I've got the story pretty much fleshed out, I've got someone helping me write where I live, I thank everyone on this forum and you especially Darkenergy134 you were quite helpful.

Ah, see never been a fan of realistic stuff. My interests are firmly rooted in fantasy. The world I'm working on is actually a world in different eras, which allows the players to choose to play in a world of petty gods and numerous deities, a new world of high magic, an overrun world where magic is banned and people are killed for their beliefs or a steampunk world where technology reigns. All on the same continent!

Sounds pretty cool and if I could be so bold as to suggest genre names, maybe "Mythpunk" or "Steamology" I enjoy fantasy quite a bit also (FFX all the way baby) but I'm focusing on a more realism-based game right now, I'll probably start writing a fantasy after I'm done with this game.
