I'm part Scottish/Irish. I would wear a kilt if I had one.

I generally don't have a problem with them. Though I think they should be mostly restricted to Scottish people (they're Scottish, right?), or else you start to become somewhat creepy. They're especially appropriate for bag-pipe players. I love the bag-pipes. Though speaking of kilts does bring up a certain picture I'm not sure I can provide a link to here...though it is hilarious.

No. Kilts are Irish. The Irish brought them to Scotland during invasions/migrations. That said they are prob more part of Scottish tradition then Irish now.

Also did you know that haggis was not invented in Scotland either!

Real Kilts are cool, as are real Kimonos or real Hawaiian grass skirts... But all those things should be restricted to the natives of their originating lands. Nothing's more pathetic to see than a Scottish guy in a kimono or a Chinese guy in a kilt.

Shall we restrict pajamas to Southwest Asia while we're at it? Should we prohibit everyone but Americans from wearing blue jeans? Where does this stop?
I don't mean this to sound like a personal attack, I just dislike the idea of centrally organized fashion.

I certainly like the idea of a legless wrap garment for men. But the kilt, in its popular form, just looks to me like a pleated flannel skirt. Get rid of the pleats and employ a heavy enough sporran, and I'd never wear pants again.

Yes indeed. After all (From what I've read) the Scots were originally a large tribe of Irish people who left the island and formed new villages in what is today known as Scotland.

never worn a kilt before.. but i'd ware one if pressed.. i guess. There's no reason not to... but I'm afraid i would have to wear underwear.. a big no-no in the real Kilt wearing crowd. They don't threaten or frighten me. Women get to wear pants and don't get any flack about it.. but i live in a society where thats accepted and generally wearing a skirt is not... but in other societies it's different and while i have lots of respect for your courage and boldness i could not match it.

That is what the sporran is for. When you sit down the sporran is heavy enough the push the wool down so you don't have to worry about it.

You don't have to be celtic to wear Kilts. I'm a little bit Irish but I wear a checker like tartan. The way we bagpipe players and Kilt wearer's say that if you are wearing underwear you are wearing a skirt, but if going regimental then you are wearing a kilt. I only wear underwear if i'm going to school (obviosly would be imbarrasing if my lady friends would see my organs). But in public I have no Fear of going regimental.

It's not that.. i just wouldn't feel personally comfortable w/o underwear. i was also just pointing out that specialized behaviors, such as wearing kilts and underwear are just that.. specialized. While i could wear a kilt regardless of ethnicity, it would be unusual in an environment in which it was not meant... i.e. where it is not at least semi-usual to see kilts or where kilts are only seen on certain occasions. It's not unusual to see kilts at a St. Patrick's day parade but it would be unusual(for me anyway) to see one at say... a school w/ a uniform that doesn't allow kilts.
