Which did you enjoy more?
I'd have to give an edge to KOTOR 2 for the strange story about the death of the force really making me think about my choices for the first time, and the characters who I cared for more than I did in KOTOR 1 (Carth and Jolee were the only ones who I look upon from KOTOR 1 with fond memories.)
That's not to say I didn't enjoy KOTOR 1 I just liked KOTOR 2 much more, even if Lucasarts fucked Obsidian on the release date. If they would have gotten another half year the game would have been perfection even without it though it is damn close.

I would love KotoR 2 so much more if I COULD GET IT TO FREAKING WORK ON MY PC. *grr*

That said, I loved it a lot, but I dunno...I've yet to top the storytelling fun of playing a goody-two-shoes Jedi all the way up until the Reveal, and then going pure Dark Side and getting the evil ending. Made the Bastilla romance more fulfilling, too.

KoToR. The only one who's allowed to release stuff unfinished is Schubert.

KOTOR. I mean seriously, best twist in a game ever. Hands down.

Regardless of all that about Kotor 2 being unfinished, I still really enjoyed it. My main complaint was that the story felt lacking compared to the original.

I actually like KotOR 2 quite a bit more, mainly because it is darker and a bit more mature. And Kreia is one of the best written npcs of all time

If not for the amazing plot twist in the middle of KOTOR 1 i would give my hate off to KOTOR 2 There was something fun about going off into to space to re assemble the jedi council only to brutally murder them all and further tear the balance off the force, for i was nothing but a wound.

On word: Kreia.

Ok, a few more words: I think Kreia is easily one of the most interesting and well-written characters ever presented in the Star Wars universe, and she makes KotOR 2. The way in which she makes the protagonist (and, by extension, us) really think about a Jedi's relationship with the Force gives the game incredible depth and gravitas. The way in which she berates the Exile for giving a handout to a beggar and leads us to see the repercussions of such a seemingly insignificant action is brilliant.

And, most of all, her view of the Force as a tyrannical thing that manipulates and enslaves is both terrifying and, though outwardly the rantings of an insane former Sith, terrifyingly logical when she lays it all out.

So, yeah...KotOR 2.

KOTOR 2 had far better combat system, feat selection, and item customization.

And an actual crafting system.

And Treia is probably my favorite character out of all the RPGs I've ever played.

On the other hand, the game is unpolished, and without various mods which I haven't bothered to get it's pretty lame at some points. No assassin droid factory, and stuff like that.

Overall, I definitely like KOTOR 2 better.

But I'm currently replaying KOTOR 1, and while I miss certain feats only available in KOTOR2 (apparently KOTOR 1 doesn't seem to have Weapon Finesse, at least not on my scoundrel/rogue whatever) and the crafting system and a whole lot of stuff, I certainly enjoy playing around with blasters instead of not even bothering with them for my main character since you start as jedi.

And I really love sneak attack, because Rogue is one of my favorite D&D classes. And you couldn't really get it without prestige class as Jedi Watchman/ Sith Assassin in KOTOR 2 on your main character.

I don't really remember all the characters from KOTOR1, but I've always liked Mission and that cat girl jedi, if I remember it right. The jedi guy from Kashyyk was cool, too.

But they still, in my opinion, got nothing on the characters in KOTOR2. Treia/Creya, as I've already mentioned, is my favorite RPG character ever. She made the most awesome mentor figure, and I'd have her over that useless ***** Bastilla any day. The guy with the robot arm, forgot his name, was really cool too. I liked his character and his general background. I really can't think of any KOTOR2 characters I didn't like.

I personally find KOTOR2 a far superior game and story compared to KOTOR1. It's a lot less polished, too, and I have recently replayed it so I guess I'll stick with KOTOR1 which I haven't really bothered to beat since, like, 2003 or so.

KOTOR1 definitely gets cool points for letting me play through a significant part of the game as a streetsmart fast-talking scoundrel with 2 blasters and complete amoral personality as opposed to a streetsmart fast-talking jedi with a sword and complete amoral personality. Yay.

I love sneak attack. The moment I get my jedi prestige class in KOTOR1, I'll just pick up Stasis and abuse the hell out of Sneak Attack.

And Kreia's philosophy on force and everything is simply awesome. I so totally agree with her.

I actually stopped playing KOTOR 2 because the intro was too damn long/hard (Kind of like how Yahtzee hated Monster Hunter Tri because of the tutorial). I know it got better later, but I just found the fucking asteroid too annoying and unappealing to bother continuing.

Thus, a heavily biased KOTOR 1 for me.

KOTOR. It simply had a better story, a more developed world, a better villain, and overall had the best story-arc of anything Star Wars related ever, even better than the original movies. KOTOR II was a bit darker, had better characters, and they tweaked the gameplay a bit, but that didn't make up for the overall weaker story in my opinion.

I would say KOTOR 2 was better in every way: graphics were smoother, powers were better, you didn't have to use stimms to survive the most basic battle, the characters were more interesting - need I go on. I loved the second one, but I didn't actually like the the first one - I did play them out of sequence, which have corrupted my opinion somewhat

Depends, are we allowed to take into account mods for these games, namely the Restored Content Mod for Kotor 2?

Because if not then I'd say the original Kotor is the better game. If mods are allowed however, then my vote swings over to Kotor 2. Kotor 2 I find has the better story and characters, but without mods its unfinished state is just plain unbearable. With mods though, well, I love it!

Original KotOR hands down. The story was more engrossing, the characters appealed more to me, and I found KotOR 2 to be a tad 'grindy'.

KOTOR was a much better game mainly because as noted above the plot and the NPC's were much better and more fleshed out. KOTOR2 did have the prestige classes and higher levels which was nice but other than that it was pretty poor in comparison.

I did not really get into Kotor 1, but I beat 2, so I liked it better. Not sure what people mean by unfinished though.

Official versions: KOTOR
With Mods:KOTOR II

Overall, I found both plotlines intriguing and characters fleshed out well. The second one was simply released half done. But the second one has a better crafting system.

SO, with mods to restore content and fix the majority of bugs, the second one takes the cake.

Basically they didn't flesh out the story or characters, so it was rather flat in comparison to the original, which as someone noted above made it feel like more of a grind.

Well, I know I suffer from Oblivion syndrome with Kotor, so I just accept it as fact that the first is better.
