So when Kotor came up on steam not too long ago for 10$ I decided to buy it since I heard lots of good things about it and I really enjoyed the game, so I was wondering if the second one is also good. Did they change the combat a bit cuz it was getting pretty lame at then end.

The ending is crap since Obsidian were forced to do a last-second rush job when Lucasarts changed the deadline, but other than that it's pretty much more of the same.

If you didn't like the combat in the first, you wont in the second. Again, just more of the same. Only big difference is Obsidian went with a more morally grey premise for the plot rather than the light vs. dark concept of the first. Some people like the plot shift, others don't. Me? I liked it. I honestly think that Kotor 2's story is the more overall interesting one since it relies much less on that one hit *BAM* plot twist (Excellent although it may have been). But again, that's just me. I also found 'The Exile' more interesting to play as than the character from the first game.

Kotor 1 is still the better overall game though. 2 *could* have been better, but a buggy rushed release completely botched that up.

kotor 2 was made by a different company. Its good, but it isnt complete, they were forced to release the game due to deadlines and because of this content was cut and the game doesnt feel complete and for that alone i would say kotor 1 is better.

Anyone know if the Steam version is more likely to work? Couldn't get KotOR2 to work on my computer.
Sorry if that's too off topic, but haven't played either due to bugs. :(

Seriously. Why are we even having this discussion? KOTOR 1 had better characters, a better plot (Kreia trying to kill the Force?), better environments, and- most of all- it was FINISHED.

I loved KOTOR 2 for its complex story, deep characters, and mysterious cliff hanger ending. It was the kind of Star Wars experience I had always wanted, played through it 3-6 times. Could it have been better? Ya, but it was good still even if it wasnt complete.

1 is far superior.

2 definitely had the potential but it was so broken and lacking in a number of complete plot lines, etc.

I'd heard all the horror stories as well. I bought KOTOR on Steam, and it runs like a charm on Vista. I've got everything maxed out except for grass. For some reason, grass just slows the game down.

On topic, I've heard about part 2 as being unfinished and everything. If it ends up on Steam however, it'll probably cost $10 like part 1, so that's not a bad deal.

Actually the plot makes perfect sense and in many ways is better than that of the first game. The problem was the cut content and the way in which the story was told. The influence system for example plays a much, much bigger role in Kotor 2 than it does in 1 and much of the story is told using it, if you didn't spend enough time with your crew... well, you're only getting half the story.

If you're curious to get the full story someone actually turned it into a sort of online book a couple years back, including the bits that were cut from the game thanks to time limits. And ya know what? It's a pretty good read!

KotOR 2 would have been better if it was finished. As it stands, KotOR 1 is a superior game simply on the basis of stability, absence of bugs, general polish and having a finished and hole-free story. However, if any of the KotOR 2 restoration projects finally see the light of day, this might be revised.

I have found that 2 is better. I just think The Exile is a better and deeper character to play and that is the most important thing in a Role-Playing Game. I also found the story easier to follow.

It's in open beta and was only released a couple weeks ago. Haven't tried it myself yet... I'm patient, I've waited years now for a decent restoration mod to be done so I might as well wait for the bugs to be ironed out now. But it's there for the download right now if you like and the reception it's been getting is good, obvious bugs aside.

KotOR2 was a great game, all the way up until the end. In true Obsidian fashion they mismanaged their resources and had to rush the last part of the game, skipping an entire world,
rushing Malachor V
and having to take massive shortcuts with the ending.

Each possible ending was supposed to have a video to go along with it, instead you just had
Kreia
talking to you after an amazingly lame and short dungeon'esk world.

I loved KOTOR 2. I played 1 first and thought it was okayish, but 2 was a masterpiece. Hated the combat in both though. But in games like this, it's mainly the setting that counts, I thought the characters and planets were 10x better in the second one. In 1, the only interesting characters and places were Bastila and Korriban.

1 set the standard, that cannot be argued. It was gorgeous, immersive, and fun. However, apart from the light/dark aspect, everything was all the same through every playthrough, and you could abuse your companions as much or as little as you wanted without consequence or the story changing.

2 would have one-upped it, were it released in its completed form. But as it is, the atmosphere is better, and gives you a feeling that what you do actually IS making the difference- almost everyone takes the time to remind you "The galaxy is in shambles!" and deliver their personal view on what you've been doing- the companions are much more interesting, HK-47 seems more psychopathic than before, new abilities to play around with, and most importantly, I didn't have to wait until half an hour to midnight to get some nice loot.

And Brianna is hot. I defy you to give me a better reason.

I love kotor2. It should have been better. It wasn't. Such a fucking pity.

So both games are great essentially.. but I like the cast and the overal story of 2 more.

Obsidian tried to go back to their golden days. Made the game much like planescape:torment, but deadline was too soon to make it really happen.

Combat is the same as the first kotor, classic AD&D system. Loot is better in the 2nd though.

I say, get the game.

1 was one of the best games I've ever played and one of the few RPGs i've played through more than twice. 2 was a fantastic game, but just couldn't match up to its older brother. You should still get it though.
