As weird as this sounds. I would have liked 2 better if there was a third one. The first one felt complete while 2 felt like the second part of a trilogy. There is a lot of stuff story-wise they leave unresolved

Kotor 2 was a better game but had the worst endings ever. Kotor 1 had a amazing end but was just yawn when you suddenly switched from being a normal soldier or whatever into a jedi class. Gamewise Kotor 2 is better than 1 but the end world is total shite wich comes from the rushed launch.

There may be a couple of problems with Kotor 2 though. I had played it alot on this PC b4 but suddenly whenever i played a male character the character would just freeze in place and be unable to move even though every1 else moved. Same happened when i switched to another character neither would move or do anything at all. Had to save and reload the save wich was a pretty stupid bug wich i never had back when i first got it. When i installed it a few months ago again to play though for fun it wouldnt even launch anymore. This was on XP though.

I don't rate either of them that highly but out of the two I like 2 a lot more. It covered over some of KotOR's bad points like making the combat easy to cover up for the system not being very good. Shitting on the Star Wars "cannon" makes up for it having to use the licence. It trumped some good points of the original by improving the characters and writing a lot for example.

KotoR 1 is better by far - less bugs, a more coherent storyline, and a much better ending.

KOTOR is definitely the superior game. The sequel got farmed out to a different studio (Obsidian instead of BioWare), and was then rushed. It shows. KOTOR2 bugs more and the story's not quite as intricate or compelling as the original. Then again, I am a bit of a BioWare fangirl, so make of that what you will.

The storyline has a lot more depth in the first, but in the second the combat is elaborated on through the addition of extra weapon customizations and epic jedi classes. The combat in the first game was a bit too grindy (not correct but close) for my taste but the combat in the second is just so much more visceral and fun in the later stages.

Really it boils down to whether you like story or whether you like gameplay. They both act as standalones, I played the second first and had no trouble understanding the plot despite a few gaps in knowledge.

KotOR 2 had so much potential, but it was rushed in the end. I really enjoyed the darker, more psychological setting in KotOR 2. Sometiems I wasnt sure what my responses would hold as to light side or dark side. When it comes to having an infamous "middle-ground", I think KotOR 2 really pulled through. Still a GREAT game.

Hands down, KOTOR 1. Excellent storytelling and great set pieces. KOTOR 2 was a sad, painful disappointment only because it was rushed at the last minute. The game's story was cool and different (although I felt it favored the Light Side a little too well), but the fact none of the character arcs get resolved, the rampant bugs and all the missing content (which was left on the disc!) was really upsetting.

KotOR II: The Sith Lords was definately my favorate in terms of gameplay and literary depth. However, it is clear (from more than a dozen personal playthroughs) that it was incomplete and was rushed at the end. The sequel was, engine and play-style-wise, a carbon-clone of the first game, which was painfully apparent from the outset of the game. That said, it did not interfere with the narrative and, despite the limitations, still conveyed the mood effectively to the player. However, the best part was the deep lessons conveyed by Kreia throughout the journey that made the entire experience almost intoxicating for story-junkies like myself. Pity it wasn't fully finished, by I enjoyed the second game much more than the first.

Yes, like the elusive black swan, we have long been considered just a myth. Sightings are rare, but not unheard of. It's natural habit is often the RPG, but don't be surprised to find a few lurking in the midst of an FPS.

Seriously. Why are we even having this discussion? KOTOR 1 had better characters, a better plot (Kreia trying to kill the Force?), better environments, and- most of all- it was FINISHED.
This is exactly right.

I did find the plot interesting, but it became so convoluted (and not to mention completely unfinished in many aspects) that it could in no way challenge the first. Like I said in my previous comment, the second definitely had the potential but even if it was finished I don't think it would of quite stood up to the original.

The characters were dull beyond belief (with the exception of Atton) and even HK-47 (the gem of the original) wasn't particularly interesting to talk to. Not that you got the chance to anyway because you only repaired him about an hour before you got locked onto the final part of the main quest. The influence system was ham-fisted and unimportant (there was already a far more natural albeit hidden system in place in the first). The only other game I've seen it used in was NwN 2 and it didn't work there either. It made conversations a frustrating mini game at times where you'd have to lick someones arse over and over until you did it in the right way, just to find out a very minor and often uninformative piece of information.

The first game even looked better.

The argument from some that KotOR 1 was only better by default is a little insulting to the game, as is the argument that the plot wasn't good because it wasn't stupidly complicated. The plot was simpler than the second, but it was also so tightly controlled and wonderfully delivered that it beat that of the second twice over. The twist was superb and not foreseen by many (including myself).

The second game's twist involving Kreia was revealed in the bloody MENU SCREEN if you hadn't already watched that ridiculously pixelated FMV in a random conversation with her some time during the game. It was barely hidden by the stupidly blatant hints from a fairly early point within the game when she talks to everyone you're supposed to have killed.

EDIT: Wow, it really sounds like I despise the second xD I don't, I really enjoyed the game, but there were so many things that had been done better in the original that it became infuriating. Having said that, the one thing that always stood out for the second game was the mood. You really did feel like the galaxy had been bummed one too many times and it was on it's last legs.

Alas, I still don't feel this was better than the original but definitely on par. It is hard however to compare two different moods when they're made specifically to fit a very different type of place. The first felt like a war was going on, with the Sith and Republic everywhere you went, and the second with a tired galaxy now being attacked from nowhere, and seemingly without reason.

I'm afraid I have to go with KotOR 1 on this one. I don't really need to reiterate what's already been said, the game is horribly broken and unfinished, with only two patches to fix this buggy mess.

However, there is a new content patch that is going through a sort of public-beta at the moment and may fix some of these glaring issues. Unfortunately, the world has moved on, so people like me won't bother going back to it.

I played the shit out of KotOR on the first generation xbox so much that it will always hold a special place in my heart. This isn't to say it was superior in every way to KotOR: TSL, and there were many new features present in the second one that would have made the first one even better.

I guess, because games are an art form and art is subjective! Just imo!
You can argue all day that one game is definitely better than another but it will (pretty much) always be a subjective rather than objective issue. Subjectively, Atton was way better than Carth, Carth was always a bit dour and serious for me!

I love them both. Why is there no both option? :) It's probably one of the best RPGs ever made and it set the bar that Mass Effect just recently raised.
I totally agree with you on everything you just said! :D
