i recently started larps and have been getting some stick from my family (not unexpected) however what i dont get is that they give me more hassle for LARPs than the tabletop gaming i used to do.

so i want to put it to the vote which is more nerdy LARPs or Table Top gameing?

on the onehand with larps theres the dressing up in armour etc but atleast your outside getting exercise and all go to the pub afterwards where as with table top your inside wasting away and the social life tends to be more restricted (LARPS can be 10 - 20 people at my local but at festivals there are hundreds but table top gameing is normally less people(in my experience))

edit: LARPS is Live Action RolePlay and involves you playing the character and running around outside

heres a trailer http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vpeLlbe2OoI
yes i know its german but i cant be bothered to serch for a better one and it showes you what LARPs is.

Live Action Role Playing Something
Dressing up and roleplaying with swords and such. I assume there's more to it but I don't get it.

How du you define nerdy? nerdy can be good.
It "can" be good, but not when it comes to LARP.

LARPs is the bottom end of the barrel. I play table top RPGs and we rip into the LARPs people.

I mean there's being a nerd, and then there's LARPs.

Ah......LARP eh.....um I don' t think it is nerdy, just wierd.
That's a point. It kind of transcends nerd to sheer, outright, odd.
It also looks like a huge steaming pile of fun. Who doesn't want to smash the crap out of one another with fake weapons?

Nerdy as hell, but damn fun all the same. Also, a damn sight more healthy than tabletop. Good for you i fathom. Beats paintball right out the window for sheer enjoyable violence and buggery.

I must try this sometime.

I think for what it might get in physical activity the sheer loss of 'cool' involved would be damaging to anyone's health. That and half, nay, most of the fun of table top gaming is about the worlds, stories and systems. In LARPs, well, it's just awful. *Shudder*

I forward that you really need to care less about what other people think. You see no visceral joy in charging at some poor sod with the intention of beating him around the head? You see no worth in the joys of social situations where the premise is good honest fun and bludgeons?

I pity you, good sirrah, i truly do.

To the creator of this thread, how do you go about finding one of these merry bands? And where do you get the nifty weapons? As you can see, i already posses the armor required for this event.

As for my verdict; Outdoors. Physically intensive. Highly social. Challenging. Skillful. Nerdy my shiny blue ass! I may love my Tyranids but i can spot a good thing when i see it.

Tis not for anyone to judge, you either play one, both, or neither. It's the FUN derived that justifies the practice, sure, think it's nerdy if you want, but remember your reading this right now on a gaming forum...MANY consider this a nerdy thing to do.

LARPing is totally awesome. It's so fun to make little quest-games with a few friends. I voted it more nerdy because it includes the whole 'committing to a character' aspect but some people (like our lot) don't bother with that stuff. I guess table-top games have less room for goofing around though, which I'd say makes it pretty nerdy.

For me table topping is more nerdy, at least when i go LARPing i have good time, and a few beers. When i don't have a girlfriend i occasionally score, plus i don't have to read all those, imo nerdy rulebooks. Plus i've experienced that if you play with alot of different, you tend find yourself a crew to join, and being part of a LARP crew boosts the experience in every way.
So LARPing it is.

I say table tops are the more nerdy. What with all the rules and preperations and dice throwing, LARP can be improvised most of the way, LARPing can be executed while drunk, more girls LARP, LARPing can be done by regular people. LARP has bigger variety of themes.
Alot of things i think makes LARPing less nerdy than table topping.

We all used to do this when we were small with toy swords and guns.

Although you make it sound an awful lot like acting.
