I would prefer to be the Avatar and have all four. But, since I can only have one, it'd be water. I only say this because water is just about everywhere in the fucking world. Earth is too, but unless you're good enough to bend metal, you will run into trouble. Air doesn't have any extras like Water has Ice and Fire has lightning, so I'm not too interested in that. As for fire... that's my second choice. I only don't pick it because a good water bender can easily take down the average fire bender. Just sayin.

Fire, because that can also give me control over lightning, which, in theory, can give me control over electricity in general, and there's so much shit you can do with that 
Water bending for me! I love the style and the usage. Plus, 70% of the Earth is covered in WATER!
Aesthetically, I'd go for fire. The idea that it represents passion, energy and life is awesome. Plus, it's beautiful. Plus, I would set things on fire by flicking my finger, which is always a plus. Always.
Mostly, though, I'd go with whatever would let me bend magma/lava. It could be either fire or earth, maybe even both.

Water because of teh healz. Also the downright overpowered ability to control people. I mean if you think about it it'd be the win button if Katara hadn't been so "lawful good" about it all.

But it is pretty hard for the other three benders to avoid fighting on land, considering you need it to grow food and actually live on. While the fire Benders have a strong navy, and the water benders make due mostly on ice, they still need to go onto land if you actually want to fight the earth benders, since they have no reason to go out onto the water.Argtee said:

I mean, water can be steam and ice as well, so it can have similar effects to air and earth if you need it to, so it has a tonne of versatility, but it also has good qualities like bringing rain to drought areas, or holding back floods, or speed-swimming (and I guess you could Silver-surfer it with an ice-board/platform). Water. I've always held the belief that a good enough waterbender could freeze people's blood and figured that would end a lot of fights quickly.
Tough choice between Fire and Earth.
With earth you can create barriers, toss huge boulders, trap your enemies. Theres also making armor, weapons, tons of practical applications, and wouldn't it be awesome to just ball shot someone by stomping on the ground to raise the earth.
Fire though..... fires freaking awesome, burn stuff, set people on fire through direct or indirect (Spontaneous combustion). Rocket boots, heat ray, create just a barrier around you so hot nothing can get through before getting turned to ash. And of corse shooting lightning!
I'd just have to go with fire because if anyones going to mess with me, I'll set you ablaze or shock you to death with a lightning bolt.
