Looking at Red Dead Redemption's slightly revolutionary multiplayer lobby got me thinking. Well, first it got me excited, then jealous, and THEN it got me thinking:

I can't afford to always be among the first to pick up a new game and get online with it, and finally getting there can sometimes be less fun than I had anticipated; everywhere I look there are people who've been at this for months, who've got their online buddies with them and generally seem extremely comfortable in an environment which is still new and intimidating to me, and not gonna lie, it kind of kills my excitement. It's like showing up at a new school months into the semester.

Anyone else get this? Or should I just stay away from the multiplayer lobbies?

I don't play online often any more, but when I did and was just starting an old game, I tended to have fun. Then I would end up near the top of the leaderboard, so I'd receive tons of hate mail, especially since I was new to the game. Then I stopped playing online, and have had a happier gaming experience.

Try to stay in the middle to avoid that type of situation.

I don't give a damn about how long who I'm playing against in a multiplayer game has been doing it. I am here to play not to brag.

I know I am going to die. Many, many times. Hopefully, I won't permaragequit before I start getting a bit more skilled.

I'm actually feeling the same way about Left 4 Dead 2, and I haven't even gotten the game yet. I'm not a total nub (I have played L4D and the L4D2 demo), but I feel slightly uncomfortable just thinking about a game that's been out for months and is largely team-based.

The only online I play is the L4D series and TF2. I don't really have a problem because new people are getting those games all the time, at least amongst people I know. Luckly, normal is pretty easy on l4d and no one really K/D whores on TF2 because that data isn't displayed to others, so they are both pretty welcoming to beginners.

Stick to campaigning for a bit, if you have any shooter experience, you should be fine. I got L4D 1 late and my friend had been playing for a few months and he only played expert, so that's how I learned, on the hardest difficulty possible. Now, for L4D2 I play only expert. If you start on the hardest and that's where you learn, you already get a step ahead of most starters. Then move onto versus later if you're uncomfortable.

Never had that problem, but makes sense.
When I jump into a new game, especially FPS, I immediately start kicking ass. Then again I've been playing FPS almost every day since 1993...

I don't usually like it because I know for a fact that I am not as good at the game as most of the people that I am playing with. At the same time, my learning curve (except in FPS games) is fast enough that I quite quickly catch up to match and surpass the average player.

I chose a little bit intimidated but It manifests itself in me by just being extremely attentive in figuring out the tricks others have already picked up.

I have pre-ordered every game I've played online for the last five years or so, and I'm a very effective player so I tend to be among the 1% of players that have the highest level the first few days of a release.
But not in Aion, there I was one of the top 5 Elyos players (ahead of the first 1%) on my server after 4 hours of play. Being unemployed rocks sometimes!
And I really prefer to figure things out for myself, instead of listening to more experienced players, so that helps too I guess.
