Thank you to everyone who gave their imput. I do believe I'll buy an LCD TV. I would go with an LED but they're way outta my price range.

I've been saving my money for a few months and doing research on the internet, but should I get an LCD or Plasma TV. Currently, I'm using an old tube TV from '97 so really anything is an improvement. I actually trust people's opinions advice here, which is why I'm posting.

I've read plasmas have a faster response time than LCDs but does that really matter? Is burn in a big problem with plasmas anymore? These are just a couple questions I have. Any imput of yours is greatly appreciated.

Also, I don't watch much cable TV, so the new TV would be use 96% for gaming and 4% for movies. I am cheap when it comes to most situations, but to me this is a big purchase and will spend the extra money for a good set.
If you get google happy and read some professional tech comparisons, you'll find that plasma is by far the best in terms of picture quality. They have deep blacks, rich colours and handle motion better than LCD. They are also alot more power hungry, and burn-in does occur...although it is very minimal on the newest screens(read individual reviews).

You'll probably get more screen for your money if you buy plasma too...

Make sure to check to native resolution of every screen you look at.

LED LCD, and please, for the love of all things good, make sure its backlit and not just edgelit. Unless you have a space problem, edgelit is just not as good as backlit.

I know that (last time I checked) Samsung and Sony, had both gone to Edgelit, while Sharp has remained Backlit - but do your research and remember, it doesn't matter how good it looks in the store, when its at home, it stands alone, so make sure its good, but the best? Well, maybe not necessary. And I'd advise against 3D, its a gimic, and people will regret it in 5 years (I hope).

Oh, and I still have a CRT :D - But its not 1080p, so, I may have to jump up soon.

EDIT: Yes, response time is vital, especially for video games and sport watching (ha, like any of us do sport watching, sorry, but its worth mentioning atleast). Old LCDs ust to suffer ghosting, so check into the Hz I think 100-200Hz is ok, but don't just go with that, 2ms is what I think is good enough for a PC monitor, but a larger screen the rules change.
