So ive spent the past dozen hours in front of my computer ((not that i dont do that normally)), doing something new. Learning a second language.

At the moment, ive decided Japanese should be my second language. See, i decided on it because not only to i want to visit japan in the future, but i also like to challenge myself. And from what everyone says, Japanese is the hardest to learn. ((my headaches agree))

So i ask The Escapist Community, how many languages do you know? Bi-lingual? TRI!?!?
And what languages do you know? Why do you know them? ((I thought about Italian. Its such a sexy language my wife would never be able to turn me down~! if you catch my drift ;D))

English is my first language and I can speak Spanish and Irish moderately well.

I know Irish because, well, I am Irish and I learned Spanish in school because I always thought it was a nice sounding language. Sometimes i wish I'd done French instead though.

It depends on your definition of language, really.
I speak Norwegian and English fluently.
[sub]The degree to which I'm fluent may be discussed. I'm absolutely rubbish at speaking in both languages. Unless I have a script I'll need long pauses to search for words.[/sub]
I am able to write French, or something that resembles French. I got a good grade in school in any case.

The thing is that, being Norwegian, I can also speak and understand Danish and Swedish. Both languages are very similar to Norwegian, to the point of almost being different dialects, so I don't know if it counts.

Best case scenario: I'm penta-lingual.
Worst case scenario: I'm bi-curiouslingual.

I also speak Weeaboo-Japansese. That is, I can say desu.

One and a half I think. English is my primary language and since I'm from Chinese background (British born Chinese) I can sort of speak Chinese abit (simple sentences). My parent weren't able to sent me to this Chinese speaking school so that why I can't speak it properly.

I've tried learning Japanese and Norwegian but that hasn't really panned out. By 'trying to learn' I mean, 'lazily thumbed through several guide books and took a class on the subject over the course of about 8 to 10 years'.

Norse?
What do you mean?
The old Norse, as in viking age speak? West-Norse or East-Norse?
Or just Icelandic?

My primary language is Dutch, and I think it's safe to say I speak English fairly well.

Given that I've taken french classes for almost six years now, you'd think I would be able to speak it to an extend... Yeah, that's what I's like to think too. Even my German is better (And I dropped that after two years.)

I also know Animenese. That is, the standard Japanese phrases you will recognise if you watch enough anime.

So, I guess I am bi-lingual.

Ive been in the same place as you the past few years. Ive tried to learn many languages ((either because a job called for it, or i had it in school)) and none of them really ever stuck.
I think the reason im trying to take this one as seriously as i am because i like having direction in my life, and having something i can fall back on thats not "trolling the web" helps me keep up with my schedule. Weather its cooking, cleaning or going to work, a language i enjoy learning keeps me focused :)

I can speak three languages fluently - English, Cantonese & Japanese (though my technical Cantonese is rubbish).

I can speak another two languages casually - French & German.

And I can read another language with a little deduction, but I can't speak it for shit - Italian.

Ah, I see.
I hear Norwegian is fairly easy to learn, gramatically. We don't have a lot of tenses and conjugations to deal with.

Did you try learning bokmål or nynorsk?

One thing that interests me about people learning Norwegian is how they'll deal with the dialects. Hell, I can't even understand people from Stavanger, myself.

Oh, and by the way: If you try learning it with a guttural (French) R, I might have to choke you.
The rolling r's are the only ones I accept.

Meravigloso fratelo! :D
I wish i could speak a lot of languages. But when i know alot of them, i start to mix them up. ((I was taking French and German at the same time in highschool, and it didnt end well for me, or my Grades.))

The two im really bent on learning are Italian and Japanese. To me, Italian is the sexiest language on the planet. ((Sorry French, but the real language of love is Italiano~!))
And ive wanted to learn Japanese ever since i was a child. ((Realizing English dubs were BAD, and i dislike trying to read text when theres action happening.))

Fixed! =P (Though I keep forgetting to not pronounce the 'g')

Thing is, I learnt Japanese for the same reason and never took a formal lesson. I was just lucky that one of my regular haunts is frequented by a few Japanese people and I got them to teach me.

And yeah it's the same with me, these days, since I don't really have anyone to speak French/German with, I end up mixing up all the vocab...(!) >_>

Thanks to the Finnish school system English and Swedish are among my languages now. I'm thinking that it might be fun to learn German or Italy as 4th language.

I'm pretty good at English, and better at Swedish than most of the other Swedes here in Sweden.

I know a little Mandarin on top of my English. Depending on what happens in the next month or so, by this time next year I will also know either Thai, Taiwanese, Japanese, Spanish or be fluent in Mandarin.
