Poll: Left 4 Dead Survival Mode

The new survival mode is out for Valve's Left 4 Dead.

It's quite different to the standard mode, quite literally you just need to survive against increasing waves of the horde. Unlike Gears of War 2 however, the AI director will not wait for you to take out the previous wave before sending in another. By the time yiou have two tanks coming at you, well, it's trouble.

Valve have rather cleverly removed any one-way-in one-way-out rooms, we found this out quite quickly after cowering in the bathroom together, walls just seem to be meant for breaking.

Personally I like this new mode but I don't think it adds a great lasting appeal. What it does do is add nice 10 minute rounds of play, it's often a bit much to spend 40-80 minutes on a main campaign. So for those with limited time the new mode is a great addition.

I really like the new mode, I think it need more maps and some of the basics still need tweaking. Have you downloaded it? What did you think of it?

Also, feel free to add any tactics or tips you think might be useful.

Played it last night with a few friends and we were surprised at just how good it is, especially on the specially designed 'The Last Stand' map.

Unfortunately we had to host the server ourselves because all the dedicated servers are totally rammed with players (i expect they still are), but we're looking forward to getting some low ping sessions in very soon.

The best tip I can give you is to choose a team of 4 friends you know you want to play with and make sure you all have mics because success is dependent on organisation and selfless cooperation.

Valve have delivered the goods once again.

Yea, it was good, gets a tad irritating when no matter how well laid out a plan is, it will fail within about 2-3 mins, but hey, thats the Ai director doing its job. (advice, when in the airport terminal, dont camp in the bathroom.)

Left 4 Dead has more intricacies than that simple premise, otherwise it wouldn't have taken so long to make. There's also the four types of special zombie which require diligence accuracy and speed to dispatch of.

Mostly though the game is about cooperation, it's this that makes it stand out. If you replaced all the assets with the Goombas it would be the same.

With any game you can say simple derogatory criticisms, like SOTC is just loads of boss battles or Forza is just a racing game. It's the way they are created, the nuances, presentation, style and most importantly gameplay that makes them good.

Its pretty good. But I would of liked a full campaign to go with Last Stand.
But the mode is intense and the challenge sufficiently frustrating. So 4/5 from me.
Plus its free.

I wasn't aware it was out. I blame Oblivion, got the thing for ten bucks and played it for 7 hours straight.

I guess I need to redownload L4D then, since I messed it up when trying to intall a new skin.

I'm really annoyed now, since my PC is so slow whenever I play L4D (no problem for anything else, but L4D just has a shitload of lag on my computer), so I can't play it. Can't even get a refund since Zavvi went bust, so I guess I'll just have to sell it on and get the 360 version instead...

You cant sell your Steam games...unless you sell your account.Or get a refund for it.

Once you bought the game and activate it on Steam thats it, no turning back.

I think it's alright.
I'd have to play it more, and with people I actually know. The random guys I played with last night were actually pretty nice, good guys. But's it's not the same, you know?
But it's pretty tough. I was thinking: Oh yeah, It'll be hard. But you have no idea until you're actually there getting smoked by 1 of 3 smokers and then getting pounced by 4 hunters while attempting to flee from 2 tanks.
Seriously.

But it's a good time.

I voted Bad. Because it is sheer hair-pullingly difficult.

If it plays okay in single player then you just need to find a decent server, or set up a dedicated one yourself.

i like the survival mode its hilarious when you and 3 people are hiding on the lighthouse and one gets pulled off and they start screaming like a girl, only for you to save them right before they fall right off the building
