Naw it's just fine the way it is. I like to pretend they're honest to goodness zombies. Not some weird disease that turns the living into the dead.

Traditional Voodoo zombie raised from the dead by asking baal the spirit of the dead to let them walk the earth by one powerful hougun lord. (Sorry if I got any of those voodoo spellings wrong I'm new to the religion)

I don't wanna be "that guy" that quotes yahtzee, but "Here are some zombies" Is just about all the plot this game needs.

I realise it's a game intended for continuous multiplayer replay value, but the lack of story does detract a bit for some people. Especially considering this is valve we are talking about, it seems a bit of a waste of a potentially amazing oppurtunity.

A lot of people have said, pong (and other similar games) doesn't have a story line but there is no human aspect to those games. Left 4 dead has 4 distinct characters with names, faces and personalities and the lack of backstory and character development is a dissapointment. Don't get me wrong I love left 4 dead but you can't expect to create characters and have everyone be happy to have so little explanation as to what's going on.

But I get that after the fourteenth bajillion time through the same cutscenes it could get completely agonizingly boring. The idea of a story played out in cutscenes between campaigns is infeasible but there's no reason why they can't have cutscenes exclusive to the single player campaign.

Alternatively why not have an option to create your own character. I mean plenty of games do it these days, all it would take is 20 minutes to make a face and what not and off you go. Because as much as everyone says "make up your own story" if I was going to make up my own story, the characters would be from space, from an underground civilization or similarly bizarre locales and backgrounds. So I mean if you don't want stories don't have such individual characters, but if you want the characters at least give some indication of why we should care enough about them to not let the zombies chow down.

Machines Are Us said:
It's not supposed to have one: 'It's a Zombie apocalypse, survive.' is all that is needed.
That description is so complete, it almost needs spoiler tags.

The way it is, it works fine. "Here are some zombies, stay together and try not to die."

If it isn't broken, dont try to fix it.

I like to think that it's an unofficial 28 Days Later video game and that most of what's written on the walls of the game can fill in the blanks. It's up to you- believe whatever you want to believe.

I voted yes, without really thinking about it, it would probably ruin alot of the things that I like about it. I was mainly reffering to maybe Valve shedding some light on whats easily missed. Like the fact that witches are usually found next to dead bodies, or the writings on the safehouse walls....stuff like that.

I think it works with no story. I mean, mindless plot, mindless bad guys, mindless shooting, mindless panicking... It just works! I understand plots are an important element to games but wouldn't a plot in L4D get in the way of the fun?

Actually it might be a challenge trying to think of one that didn't ruin the game...

The whole purpose of their story line is to be a sort of campy zombie film. This is why each campaign has a cheesy movie poster.

Think if Tetris had a story.
"....And suddenly, the heavens opened, revealing a glorious light, and giant multi-colored blocks fell from the sky! They filled in every single gap, and everything was whole, but then, the blocks exploded! Disentigrating our wonderful city into dust and pixels!"

*Cough*
Have you never heard of Tetris? Bejeweled? Shining Soul II (I refuse to admit that game had a story, it was too bad to be classified as such)? Space Invaders? Centipede? Pong?

i meant that its the only good game all those games suck

Did you just say that Tetris, Bejeweled, Space Invaders, and Centipede suck? I distinctly heard you say that they sucked. Those games are timeless gems, shining examples of how even the earliest games can have lasting appeal. Wow, your avatar is fitting, considering how many fanboys are going to hunt you down.

I loved L4D. The lack of story makes it more compelling.

And you do get a *bit* of backstory.

Like how Zoey was studying the right subject after all...Zombie Horror Films
