Kids, there's NOTHING more cool than a fun, challenging game. But if your game tries to touch you in a place or in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, then I have to ask why the fuck that disc has hands growing out of it.
Let's get something straight here. I love playing a game that's difficult, makes you think, urges you to calm the fuck down or die. I love that panicking adrenaline rush I get from being two steps away from dying, but three steps away from winning. One hit kills could, actually, make a really challenging fight when used properly and sparingly.
Unfortunately, all the instances of one hit kills in games I've played are just... Bad.
Monster Hunter games are particularly guilty of this, making your previously epic +50 defense armor set completely fucking useless and having half your fucking health drained in one hit by a fucking khezu. I used to love you, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.
But, that's Monster Hunter. You'll eventually either luck out enough times to make a new epic armor set or figure out that the bow is victory given physical form.
I'm pretty close to beating Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2. But I stopped because I had a reaaaally bad day with it. I had random encounters every two steps, one of which was a fiend. I had the fiend at about 3/4ths of his health, which was a first for me, and then he used a bullshit one hit kill move that you can. Not. Dodge. Though I think you can block it. Either way, if the attack pauses the game to have a flashy attack animation, it still should not be a one hit kill. At all.
My problem lies with games where dodging or blocking isn't possible.
Personally, I think Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and Persona 4 could be greatly improved by the complete fucking removal of hama and mudo skills. Fucking daisoujo. (Though I got around that boss with a unicorn... Fuck hama/mudo, but fuck yes for tetraja.)
See, the reason I created this topic is because of one game, one fucking game. I love this game, it's honestly probably the best thing I currently own on the PSP, but... It has one problem.
You see, in this game, when you die, it's not game over, the game autosaves, then you just go back to home base with no money, and all your items and equipment are gone.
I'll say that last part again, all your equipment is gone.
For those of you curious, the game is Zettai Hero Project, which most people refer to as Z.H.P., more or less because that's on the box. Now, again, this is one of my favorite games, and probably one of the best things Nippon Ichi Software ever made--these being the same people to make titles such as Phantom Brave and Disgaea 2. So, for those of you who have played Z.H.P., you're probably wondering what one hit kills I'm talking about.
I'll put it this way: I have the urge to go buy as much bacon as possible to spite this specific kind of animal.
Yes, pigs. Those fucking, turban-wearing, nose ringed pig bastards. These little fuckers can throw you, and there's some random chance that you'll explode. And die instantly. It went like this: "Okay, it threw me. Boo fuckin' hoo, it did zero damage--WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED?!" Yes, I'm certain it wasn't the fact that I was wearing a prinny hat, because the first time it happened I had nothing equipped except the default cape and a baseball bat.
And then it happened again. So, for those of you who haven't been paying attention or just plain haven't figured it out yet, yes, I did have all my best equipment on.
I'm sure somebody who's played Z.H.P. is about to tell me about the insurance company that lets me keep my equipment. Well, guess what. When I lost all my best equipment[footnote]And now I can't do the Moonlight Butterfly. Fuck.[/footnote], I was running a mid-level dungeon to get money for just that.
Now, for discussion, what do you think of one hit kills? Can they be used for a fair challenge? Or are one hit kills just a lazy way of making a game hard?
