Let's take are already awesome Escapist, and inject a little democracy: Let's vote on whether or not we should have signatures in the forum.

I know that this isn't really an issue at the forefront of the Escapist, but I wanted to see if the staff would implement a feature based on majority opinion.

So, vote for which option you want, and comment to explain that choice.

Also, uh, rulers of this divine forum, I'll send you fresh baked cookies over the internet if you do what they say

If you mean the ones where you can edit it in your profile and it comes up at the bottom of all of your posts then yes, I think it would be a nice addition.

Although there would need to be limits on size/length/colours/pictures to stop people taking it too far.

Some high horse once said that The Escapist will never have signatures which is a good thing because sometimes they put in a huge picture which takes ages to load for some people and is most of the time three or four times as big as the post itself.

Edit: Although I'd like to have my typical Lucky Star picture down there.

I'd be fine with 2 line maximum, text only signatures. As far as those annoying giant picture signatures go, I'd say rather not.

Simplicity works, so no.

People often put in animations etc which is annoying to those of us in countries without real ISPs get throttled and can't load things. It's nice to have a forum we can visit with negligable bandwidth towards the end of the month.

They are unecissary and don't really add anything either, we already have usernames and avatars so why do we need more distinction from each other? Even if they are just text based and don't cause problems for low bandwidth users, I still don't see the point. If you can't tell users apart, you're doing it wrong.

There's no real point in stating the information twice, is there?
That's not what signatures are on forums. They are usually a quote the user likes or whatnot, some forums they are a banner.

God yes. Personally, I wouldn't permit more than a line of text or, say a banner about 100 pixels high. My corneas are scarred from browsing forums with signitures taking up half the page.

No, the way it works, the Escapist automatically crops an image that is bigger than, I think 150 pixils.

You wouldn't have to worry about that.

I don't mean the signatures that some people have that go like this:

Lorem ipsum

. . .-person
I mean the signatures that go like this:
other person said:
Great, I'll log on today.

They looked to me and said, make us mods! And I said, "no".
That's the general idea.

So... like the motto on the poster's profile page one click off the boards?
Pretty much yes. Some sites they post your gamertag like on your profile too.

Seeing as they are never mandatory I see nothing to lose by having them, although they are most certainly not a "must have".

Personally, no.

I don't like the sound of cluttering the posts with overused quotes, 'insert blah here', pointless pictures and other such nonsense. It'll increase load time, increase clutter, for those of us at work and perhaps school it'll make it more obvious what we're doing at a glance and I'm reasonably sure that most people don't read or care about other people's... only their own.

That's the way it works for avatars. We won't know if it will work for pictures in your signature.

This would also be kind of stupid if you have a square shaped signature because it would only fill out a little bit of the signature while something like a banner could use the whole signature but both get smaller.

To be honest they work better on specific forums, that is to say forums about one subject. On an Anime forum it could be a quote/picture from your favourite show/character. A games one it could mention a clan or whatnot. That way they are relevant and can add to discussion.

On here it wouldn't serve much use and would probably end up annoying people in the end.

I really don't mind either way. I personally don't think I'd use a signature, most people would already recognise me by my name or Peanuts avatar. I don't need the extra thing of a signature, if people want to read my philosophy on life they can look at my profile. But I honestly don't care either way, it doesn't seem like a pressing issue to me.

No they just serve to over-clutter the forum with pointless crap, I don't care what "witty quote" you have there or what oversized picture of some cartoon animal/videogame character you adore and nor does anyone else but you.

If you want to share favourite quotes/cartoon/videogame/real life hero then make a thread about it.

So, wait... Did we just have an argument, what?
I was agreeing with you that on this site they probably are not worth having, I don't think that counts as arguing.

I've been on forums that have signatures and it just makes threads look messy. No, I don't wish to have signatures, I'm content with how things are.

Yeah, but a gazillion (or femtioelva as we say in Sweden) short and concise signatures in a popular thread are still going to take so much time that I could read a chapter of Dickens before it's all loaded.

ONLY if there were limitations to the amount of text/image sizes in a signature, But We've gotten pretty well without them and they do just add more crap to load per-page.
