I'm taking a poll for a class about long distance relationships. I'd love it if you guys could help me out. Please give me your gender, if you think they can work or not, and if you've had a long-distance relationship, if it worked or not. :) Thanks

Mmmh, define long distance.
I was a relationship with a girl about 2 hours away. It was really great until we broke up.

There were trust issues after she cheated on me, but she was honest so that's great.

So...yeah, it did work I suppose:]

I had a long distance relationship that worked.

It started at short distance (for a few days), went long distance for six months, and then I left a (crappy) job and moved 400 miles so we could move in together.

Edit: I'm female.

Also, I had another long distance relationship prior to that, but it didn't work. So it's always a risk.

Had one, didn't work. It did last for a surprisingly long time (3-4 years) before the relationship collapsed though, so I guess it depends on how you define "worked". Sometimes I think it would have ended much sooner if we'd actually spent more time in the same country because then I would have had more time to realise what a huge jerk my ex was. Oh well.

Yeh...I'm English and living in Sweden now with my first kid and teaching program. Work that one out!

I'm a male and I've been part of several. The farthest away one of them were was a young lady from Alberta. The closest one was a young lady one county over. I've also been in a long distance relationship with one from Ohio and one from Florida. For a sense of distance, I'm right outside of D.C.

I am currently in a long distance relationship with one in northern Georgia. I've actually gone to visit her and we hit it off in a big way. I'm actually going back in a couple weeks and there's a possibility that I'll be moving there to be with her before June.

So I guess it goes without saying that I believe long distance relationships can work out.

Had one, didn't work.

In one, making it work.

So... What do I choose?

In one. It's working at the moment, but it is frustrating seeing couples together.

Define 'it worked'.

I'm in one now, it's one of my longest relationships, I'm happiest and most comfortable with my current girlfriend, and it shows no signs of falling apart.

So, it's working, but we haven't got married and had babies yet o.o

Right I have had 2. The first did not work because she lived 3 hours away and we met over the internet and just started talking. When we met up it was a lot of fun and we both had a good time but I saw her twice over 3 months because it was £50 for a train ticket lasting 3 hours so that ended
The current one I am in has lasted over a year and she is an hour away. I get a coach back home every weekend and it's a great relationship but it would be better if we lived closer

All in all I think you have to date the girl before getting in a long distance relationship but if you can make it work then go for it, more power to you.

I've never personally had one, but I've known several people who had them and they worked well. I've actually known more people who had them and they worked than people who had them and had it not work. From what i've seen, most people who can't handle a long distance relationship are so scared by the very idea of one that they never even try it.

Though I've never been in one, I think they can last for a certain amount of time, but the "long-term" situation must end at some point. It can't be permanent. I see it as sort of being in a relationship that's on ice. It's still there, and you can cultivate it to a certain extent, but you can only reap the full benefits if you're truly THERE for each other. You need to thaw out at some point. I'm sure some long term relationships have lasted years, but I think for many that's just too long. It would be like trying to survive on only tofu.

Haven't had any relationships, avoid them like the plague. Even platonic ones.
But I think it could work. There would have to be a lot of work and a lot of dedication from everyone involved. And naturally it will probably have to be temporary.

Long distance relationships that will be long distance forever are a horrible idea. They MIGHT work from a romantic's perspective but romantics are notorious for blind and stupid idealism.

Worked out fine for me; a year and a half, best relationship I've ever had, which ended on amicable terms. We're still friends. It couldn't have gone better, really.
