Today I was playing Mario Kart 64 with my brother on our old N64, when we were on the battle mode I kept looking at his screen so I could plan traps and fire Green Shells more accurately, in any split screen multiplayer would any Escapists consider looking at your opponents screen to be cheating? Or would you consider it to be fair game and use it to help you win?

Seems to be approved by the search bar, so fire away.

No point debating it, it's bs, but it's just a fact of life when it comes to split screen play. Although, when I was younger I once made a fancy cardboard contraption to hang on the television that blocked viewing of the other side of the screen. Worked great, particularly with games that supported a vertical split.

Unless you've both agreed that it's okay then I consider it to be cheating. It doesn't stop me from doing it anyway, but that's partially because it's kind of difficult not to.

Always! You should never be not cheating in my opinion. You see, when you are playing with another guy, and there is just a slight chance of you finding out what your oponent is up to, then you should definately do whatever you can to plan against him.

Good luck!

I've done that, too!

And yup, it's cheating.

How else are you supposed to win? The only thing more fun, than looking at your opponents screen, is the trash talk, you get from doing it.

Hell yeah it's cheating. Do I use it?
'Course I do. Nothing like the thrill of knowing where your enemy is, and altering your strategy accordingly. Especially if you are really subtle about it and they don't figure it out.

I try not to look at other peoples screens while i'm doing splitscreen but the entire screen is in my field of vision so even if I focus on my portion I can still see the other persons screen out of the corner of my eye. But that doesn't really matter because I consider it to be fair game, and its not like looking at their screen guarantees your victory, even if you know where they are and what they are trying to do, if they are better than you they will probably win.

It's called 'ghosting' isn't it?

I think it's cheating, unless you're just playing friendly-like. I had a lot of fun playing split screen in forge (halo 3) and using the other player as a baseball with a radio mast as a bat.

It's too hard not to but it carries the danger of you not focussing on yourself. The last time I played splitscreen it was Modern Warfare 2 (I think) and it was impossible to see anything. It was like a factory or something and it was just grey. I couldn't find doorways because they couldn't be seen for the snow blindness it gave me.

I agree with this, I reckon that it's the same as just looking at your map to see where they are.

I do it all the time, not because I try to though.. it just happens. If I'm playing halo on splitscreen then I always know where they are and plan to attack or evade accordingly. That's why when there'd be a lot of us playing we'd move around so that those on the same screen are on the same team. Then it's like ultimate teamwork instead of "cheating".

I'd rather be on the same screen and know where they are than be on different screens. Being seperated seems to promote camping and cheap glitch kills. You can still be tactical on splitscreen though, usually by hiding your trump card like your shotgun until the last moment.. the enemy doesn't often check all your stuff so you can still pull out equipment to put them off.

Oh, I've suffered a great deal of screen-watching in my time of LAN Halo and COD games. It's considered the lowest form of cheating besides aimbots at my school.

That's totally unfair. You shouldn't be able to see his monitor, that's tantamount to cheating.
Especially in strategy games like Starcraft.

Unless, of course, they're on your team, in which case it's a great team strategy.

That is cheating. Whenever I play flash games that are split-screen I say "NO SCREEN CHEATING!"

It ruins the game. Unless you do it too *Evil Laugh

It is a strategy, much like camping, that one can employ while playing split-screen. Is it cheap? Sure. Is it useful? Absolutely. If it is a part of the game, then I will use it.
