It would seem that Lotro is dropping the monthly fees and opening up an in-game store for their money now.

Looks like they've entered the micro-transaction fed MMO category.

Yeah its a good change. Too bad TOR is coming out soon and is going to pretty much absorb the whole world.

I have a lifetime sub in this game. Was annoyed about the ftp at first but reading abit about it really dosnt change much. I still keep my life time pass aswell as getting bonuses every month.
You can pay the normal monthly fee it currently has to get access to the full game aswell.
So the only thing thats free is like an extended demo that haves about half the game so peeps can if its worth playing.

Micro Transaction irritate me. They tend to screw over game balance.

Gunbound switched to a system where the only way to get good items permanently in a reasonable amount of time was to throw down your wallet.

Dreamlords: The awakening. The only way to gear up your dream lord was to buy it. To fully equip your dream lord it cost about $100. As well most level up skills required you to dump money to get them. Spending a level point in most cases costs i think around a dollar.

Im not in love with in-game stores but I know if they're done right they can preserve balance whilst also making the business the money they need.

I'd say this is a good change and i'll certainly be giving the game a try - something which I wouldn't have done if it stayed subscription based.

Hey, might even spend some money on it too.

I'm sad about it, the community will go to hell. I've never seen a f2p game with a good playerbase. Most of them are just 13 year olds and WoW players looking to troll.

I'm probably a minority, but I'd rather pay a monthly subscription than having to choose between the Death of a Thousand Cuts by micro-payments or having a substandard gaming experience.

Then again I've never been fond of LotRO anyway even when it was still P2P, so it really doesn't bother me.

They've stated that there not selling armor or weapons in the store so you cant buy your way to great gear.

I liked LOTRO (more than WoW, but that's just my opinion).

I stopped playing it because I wasn't playing very often and it wasn't very cost-efficient with my monthly fees. Once it's free I'm probably gonna go back.

Just a question - how important will the in-game shop be?

If not very, this could be my first MMO...
from the looks of things it appears that it won't be gear but items that will make things easier or useless little extras. I think I read somewhere that there's extra content there aswell.

Guild Wars has an ingame store but it doesn't really sell you anything that give a real bonus in the game other than 3 missions that have no relevance to the game, more bank space, character slots (you get 8 if you have the whole game anyways), and useless appearance things.

I've not had that problem in GW, I know I always use it as an example but other than a stint in WoW and the usual "when I was young stint in Runescape" its my only mmo. There are areas populated by kids and trolls but most people are great. Its all about who you associate with. Power Traders can be a pain as they will yell at you if you don't offer top dollar immediately. They'll also pm you notifying that someone gave them a better deal and how you suck. Usually by this time I've already found a much better opportunity.

It's hard to say what the final outcome will be. Lotro is an incredibly solid MMO though so I'm eager to see how the final product pans out.
