...without good music its a poem, not a song. Without good lyrics it lacks meaning. I need at least some skill in both, thankyou.
What he said. Can sound great & the lyrics can let it down, Can have awesome lyrics & sound like a dying cat.

It's a false dichotomy. The lyrics are part of what makes the music what it is, I don't think you can isolate one from the other and say it's better or more important.

If a song has bad music I would never listen to it, but it really bugs me when a song with a nice tune is ruined by idiotic lyrics.

"Prima la musica e poi le parole" - First the music, then the words.

Stupid lyrics can cripple a song, bad music will kill it.

Has no one realized yet (I apologize if someone has made this point before me and just got lost in the tide of posts) the having a thread pitting music against lyrics is pointless because lyrics are part of the music?

The lyrics are just another instrument. You can't think of them as seperete from the other instruments cause it isn't. Just because the lyrics have understandable words in them doesn't make them profoundly different from other instruments. The lyrics are just another instrument in the song. They aren't necessary but when added they can drastically alter a group's sound. So saying that you like lyrics more than music is like saying you like one instrument better than the rest of music. It just doesn't make sense.

Good lyrics can definitely save an awful song. For example: "Don't trust me" by 3Oh!3. It's not a great song but I love the lyrics. :D
"Tell your boyfriend, if he says he's got beef, that i'm a vegetarian and I ain't fucking scared of him." :)

But both good music AND lyrics is what makes a song amazing. Most songs by Avenged Sevenfold are a good example of this. I mean, the chorus of "Beast and the Harlot" is amazing!
3OH!3 s lyrics in that song are so mindnumbingly offensive stupid offensive and purile that i actually hate these people!

Most of its about cheting on women and stealing other peoples girlfriend! and a gold star to anyone who ca tell me who helen keller is .... that single line should have caused them to spontaniously combust.....

You need both, the fist thing you her is usually the music but even a simple repetitive song can be made up with a guy with meaningful lyrics and an amazing voice. I listen to j-pop so I'm fine without understand the lyrics but theirs nothing better than having a rough day and putting on your favorite tunes that describe your life completely. Which always makes my friends confused because my angry music usually is angry lyrics with a happy bouncy tune.

I prefer Music, because often when I listen to music it's kind of hard to tell what they're singing.
