When listening to the lyrics in a song, what kind of lyrics do you like to hear? The direct and literal ones that sets you right in the scenario, or the metaphorical ones, that lets you interpret it for yourself? I personally prefer metaphorical lyrics. They have a kind of mystery around them, that you can figure out in different ways. And you feel clever for understanding them later. I don't know, most often they seem to have a deeper meaning than most direct songs.

It depends on what I'm in the mood for. On one hand, I love bands like Coheed and Cambria and The Mars Volta who tell stories with their music, but don't ever really make the details too clear. (For example, I'm almost entirely convinced that TMV's Octahedron album is a retelling of The Hard Goodbye, the first Sin City book, and I know I'm probably wrong there, but I don't care. It's just too awesome to not be true.)

On the other hand, though, it's nice to be able to listen to something and be able to actually relate to it. Old Green Day and Weezer are my go-to guys for that. Then there are the bands that do both, like Radiohead, Pixies, and Gorillaz.

In the end, it really depends on how well each is done. Too much metaphorical nonsense is just as off-putting as too much dull and straightforward literalism.

I like my story telling lyrics as well as the open ones. I enjoy the feel of the music more than i do anything

I like songs that use a combination, you'll often find in good poetry the use of a metaphor that also means something in the literal sense. But honestly the reason I like lyrics at all is not necessarily the metaphors but the power that can be achieved in music by singing certain words in certain points in a melody.

As long as the song is interesting to me, I don't really care what the lyrics are.
Sure, it helps when I like them, but even if they're nonsense(Breaking Benjamin), as long as I can enjoy something in the song, I'm happy.
I do have to admit to a soft spot for one particular song, though.
