Since the internet has became *good*, you don't need magazines if all you want is information.
Escapist/MMo-Champion/Youtube Channels etc satisfy the hunger for unconventional popular knowledge.

However if you want to read exclusive magazines with Z List celebraties you never heard of or find The Perfect Man for you, then I strongly encourage you to shell out.

However, I do *look* through Empire and maybe even read it if I like some of the pictures if i see it.
Also, the more visual orienated magazines are awsome source material for the creative arts.

(I voted *no* as I rarely actually *read* any part of a magazine. I just look at ze pretty picturez)

I sometimes read Game Informer, since it's cheap as hell. I usually pick it up if I have money to spare and I'm in EB Games, waiting for Dungeon Crawl's staff members to come back from lunch. And Frankie, which is some indie hipster magazine that I like for all the pastel eyecandy. (Oh the shame.)

The only magazine I actually read regularly is PC Powerplay, which is an Aussie PC gaming magazine. I think for the most part, it's quite pointless to even buy that magazine, since I can get something similar online, or even on the Escapist. But hell, I like owning a physical copy, and I enjoy the articles. And the pictures. There's this guy who does cartoons. I think he's awesome. So yeah, I don't think they're completely redundant just yet.

I read Game Informer. Here in Oz it's the only magazine that reviews and previews games around the same time as the internet. The other magazines take up to three months after a games release for them to publish a review.

I like to hold magazine's in my hand. Also I find the review quality is slightly better than the majority of the internet stuff...

Nope, unless you count Escapist among them (which it technically is), but even around here I rarely check out the "magazine" content. News, sure, but the stuff that comes as a magazine (you know, the one they email you about) usually doesn't hold much interest for me.

I no longer have any subscriptions, used to have one for GI but don't shop enough at GS to justify having a card there anymore.

I almost always buy EDGE magazine, it's fared well despite the fact that all news is reported on the internet first these days.
It's well written and usually has a lot of interesting articles.
I also occasionally buy Empire, the film magazine.

And when ever I have extra cash, I sometimes buy random game/anime magazines...

So yeah, I still read them... mostly on the toilet...

Although it's getting easier to access identical material online as in a magazine, you can't exactly get full use out of online materials in the bathroom.

Until laptops become made of paper...

Occasionally pick up skateboarding magazines but usually I just read them in skate shops or parks when I'm just being lazy on a sofa.

Used to buy them much more often, now only plan to pick them up if I know someone in them.

Nope, almost never do.

Wasn't going to comment either, but then I saw the last option V_V.

For shame.

So, I was just wondering, in the age of the internet and other such widely available information technologies, do any of you guys read magazines?

Personally, I haven't had a subscription to a magazine since the PS2, but I occasionally pick up a copy of Xbox World 360, Total PC Gamer or PC Format.
I subscribed to Total PC Gaming as it was such a quality magazine and had a great indie and MMO section, along with covering games mods and hardware. Typically, with my third issue (I'd signed up to get 3 issues free for subscribing) I get a letter saying they're killing it off and this will be the last issue. I was gutted as it had a rare quality.

Seems almost all other PC or gaming magazines are either horribly laddish, like some kind of FHM for games, or they're like EDGE and so, I don't even know what it is, a combination of huge egos and a belief they're so much better than normal gamers. Oh and when I'm paying about £5 for a magazine with no cover discs, how about not having the entire second half of the magazine being either ads or the recruitment section?

I think there's a huge market for a 'Computer Active' style magazine for gaming, not in the sense that we need it to be entry level info for newcomers, but in the sense of having a weekly magazine under £2.

I wish I could add a poll of my own, so I'll just ask, out of 10, how much do cover discs sway your buying decision? I personally found it rare that they'd offer anything I couldn't go get myself, they were useful before broadband, when a 100mb demo might take 2 weeks to download, but now it's just not needed.

You know what might work? (Watch the contradictions happen right before your eyes) Take the magazine Retro Gamer - all about old games and consoles. Add a pound, and add a disc with a couple of older games, made to work on windows 7.

I'd say if you can shift 50,000 copies ( I have no idea about magazine sales ), 20p per copy goes to the owners of the games, I imagine a split of £10,000 to do a lil work on a game that doesn't sell any more would entice many people back to the keyboard.

Who here wouldn't like an updated, fully working bunch of old games being released monthly with an interesting magazine attached? Elite with issue 1 please, followed maybe by Dungeon Master.

There's a ton of people out there who don't know about abandonware, patches, emulators and the like, and they've got spending money.

Yep sure do. I regularly buy White Dwarf, the Warhammer magazine. I also occasionally get Top Gear or Empire, depending on the contents. All good stuff.

These guys have great taste.
Worth mentioning that empireonline.com is a fantastic web magazine and they have an amazing iphone app that puts the entire review database on your phone and is updated everytime you go online. It's like a hitch hikers guide to the galaxy if your like me and live in the moviedromada galaxy.
