what would you prefer in your media?

(This applies to all kinds of media. games, news, movies, etc.)

I'm 50/50. Both sides churn out an equal amount of crap, and an equal amount of good. I have no preference, I see niether side being better than the other.

Ahh, no offence but what kind of question is that? Do I like mainstream music, games or movies? I like good music, games and movies.

I wouldn't exactly call Half Life 2 independant but I love it to death.

You can't just say you like a certain thing like that when it applies to so, so many things. It's like saying, what do you like more: Food or Drinks?
So no, I won't answer. Sorry.

Frankly I don't care too much about whether my games and shops and music and movies and such are mainstream or not. I care that they're good.

I don't really care where the product comes from, just whether or not it's any good.

Where's that option?

I generally prefer to give my money to indie efforts; the mainstream cultural industries are, to my mind, built on exploitation, and tend to turn everything they touch into bland, repetitive, brainless crap - they exist to make the rich people financing the art even richer without any regard to the quality of the culture that they are constructing (the big record labels are probably the best example, but it's the same thing with television stations and news outlets and video games and movies and everything else). Indie offerings at least take the rich people out of the equation, leaving the artists to do what they want for their own purposes.

That said, the mainstream media produces quality every now and then, and I'm not going to skip out on it simply because it's not independent.

lol i guess im just a bit of an indie kid, but the only time i listen to any mainstream is on the radio on the trip to school. my ipods crammed full of indie music.

indie music has been cracking the heads of mainstream artist ever since selling you products became so damn easy, itunes store for example. As we chucked out our cds and swaped to online sales, people with talent and not much money have been able to jump right into this line of work, and in my opinion, they're bring out the best stuff.

indie games are fun and casual to play (good on school computers :p) and help kick starts some good careers to the people that are seriously into game development.

i cant say the same for indie films as most of them are worse then australian films, and thats a HUGE statment, if you dont know what i mean go watch an aussie film for bloody sakes mate. the youth ones are even worse. ive been to my far share of youth indie film festivles, its a kick in the balls cause although they are artist and whatever none of them have the balls to go anywhere out of the box, like maybe showing gretty life for example. they are all so... i dont know the word for it.... pussy, wimpy. they look at life the same way "The Great Gatsby" did before he relised he wanted more. or something like that i havent finished the book yet.

so yeah indie can be better then mainstream you just have to search through a lot of shit before you get to the good stuff.

if this is about music, i think id prefer indie ones, also in films.. i think those made by indies are innovative and something new and nice to hear or see... unlike those which are in mainstream, theres a part of you saying like ive heard this before or watched this before, it has the same formula, done over and over again..

don't really care, as long as their fun and better looking than the original Doom. The only benefit to mainstream games is the graphic quality, indie games tend to be more outlandish (good or bad).

Booyah!

I can't stand 'indie kids' who go out of their way to be different.. These people annoy me more then people who all dress the same

Especially when their favourite indie band suddenly goes mainstream, it's crap all of a sudden.

Indie stuff is always fun, but I still like some mainstream. Also depends on what we are discussing as it changes.

Mainstream and indie always have their own values in everything. Mainstream has the power to be backed by tons and tons of money, allowing some really incredibly intricate stuff.

At the same time, indie, lacking that financial backing, is more free to roam around in niche ideas and things that would not make tons of money but can still generate profit compared to how much was put in.

Both are valuable aspects of all media.
