Ok, tried searching for it but couldn't find a similar topic recently.

So for comic book fans, what are your thoughts?

Marvel - More "comicbooky", colourful costumes etc, has the Ultimate Universe, pretty decent movies, appeals to all ages. Quality of mainstream comics not doing well. Has Joe Queseda (that's bad)

DC - Has the Vertigo imprint, has Superman and Batman, but quality of mainstream comics has dropped tremendously (Crisis, reboot, repeat)

OP: Which one had X-men again? It was Marvel, wasn't it? If so, them. X-men was the only comic book I ever really liked.
Same reasoning, different choice. Batman for me, hence DC.

Edit: Oh hang on, and Watchmen!

No VS threads allowed on the Escapist, too much flaming, you should know that you're here longer than me. Still, I chose Marvel for not having "INVINCIBLE-MEN!" their heroes had problems, not just rock hard guys who go around beating people (except Wolverine of course but at least he didn't wear pajamas)

Some pics on the topic. Go me!

I like Marvel, there universe seems more connected to me. In the DC universe Batman is doing his stuff in Gotham, Superman in Metropolis and Green Arrow in Star City and never shall they mix (except for crossovers). New York in Marvel is packed to the brim with heroes, the Avengers, Dr Strange, Spiderman, Luke Cage etc.

Plus the last seven years have been pretty good at shaking up the status quo (Avengers dissembled up to Siege).

And it also has Cable, Deadpool, Ares and Ultimate Thor, all my favourite characters.

In my personal opinion, Marvel has had better story lines, better characters, and better superheroes.

Marvel has the X-men. Marvel has the Avengers. Marvel has the Civil War storyline, World War Hulk, and the Skrull Invasion, some of which tie in to comic storylines from years and years ago.

While I am a fan of the still-ongoing Blackest Night storyline focusing on Green Lantern in the DC universe, I am a Marvel fanboy at heart.

Christ I don't know...

I grew up with Marvel, Spider-Man and the X-Men will be with me forever, but after a long time of not reading comics I got back into them in 2007 with less Superhero stuff, Preacher, Sin City, Transmetropolitan etc... then Batman in a BIG way.

Apart from Batsy I'm not really into the DC universe (I fucking HATE Superman and anything Superman related) but Batman works well standalone, you don't HAVE to read any JLA stuff if you don't want to, plus DC has Vertigo.

So I guess I prefer DC these days, but wouldn't be interested in comics at all if it wasn't for Marvel... (Or Dark Horse for that matter, I read all the Aliens and AvP stuff when I was really young because my mam wouldn't let me watch the films, ironically the comics are far darker than the films turned out to be!)

Edit: I hope this doesn't get locked, I think Escapists are mature enough to not let this descend into a flame war...

I'd take Batman over any Marvel superhero, but couldn't care less about the rest of the DC lineup.

DC - Has the Vertigo imprint
I kind of don't care about any of the mainline comics anymore these days, but looking at the TPBs on my shelf, DC wins, partly for this reason (because Vertigo has Transmetropolitan and Sandman and stuff), and partly because it has Homage, which has Astro City, which wins over everything else for me, pretty much. Marvel gets an honorable mention for having Nextwave, though.

Oddly enough, I like the main DC universe less than Marvel's, because it has a long and glorious history of being completely absurd and having more nonsensical space alien and magic crap (although I still kind of have a soft spot for some of the oldschool Superman stuff, which is weird, because it's pretty much nothing but that kind of stuff).

As a totally unbiased commentator (*cough cough*), I'm going to have to pick Marvel.

I love many, many Marvel characters.

Batman is the only thing from DC that's ever remotely interested me, but he suffers from severe schizophrenia. One minute he's threatening to trash your lights and desperately in need of some lozenges, the next minute he's shouting "POW!!" and "SHAZAM!!" while hitting a shark with his pink, anti-shark paddle.

I'm not the biggest comic fan, but out of the comics I own, the only Marvel one is the Incognito series, which was made by Icon Comics, an imprint of Marvel (according to Wikipedia).

I'm more into standalone stuff like Watchmen, Various Batman comics (The Dark Knight Returns, Year One) and V for Vendetta. Anyone here have some suggestions for Marvel comics, or where I could get started with them?

Marvel has better characters in my opinion in the terms of personality and character flaws as a whole in their canonical universe. DC does have the Bat and Watchmen but Watchmen isn't canonical DC universe and they have Superman who I dislike since his only weakness is a rock

Spider-Man is very near and dear to my heart. I used to dress up as him all the time...in fact...I still do! It's some kind of fetish...yeah...

I HATE and LOATHE all of the DC superheroes(with the exception of Batman)however, DC contains the extraordinary Vertigo imprint which includes:

Y:The Last Man

Preacher

The Sandman

Transmetropolitan

100 Bullets

Oh yeah....can't forget Watchmen. This coming from a Watchmen fanatic that dressed as Rorschach at the New York Comic-Con
