I'm playing the first one again ( 11 times already), and I'm going to save Kaiden. After I played a while, I realized Ashely, is lame. Her character is just bleh. Kaiden was awesome, and I felt bad that it took so long for me to see this.

Following logic... If you are a Soldier then throw a fucking coin, they are both pretty useless in gameplay wise. Kaidan have a use until you get Liara, then he is became pretty useless...
If you are any other class then Ashley.
So... I always choose Ashley... I liked her better than Kaidan, of course that she was a little *****, but for release she wasn't bland.

Honestly, I played Mass Effect 2 all the way through before I played through Mass Effect all the way (Which makes me think what a killing EA/BioWare/Gamestop will make off of sales of the latter two games: just to play through the backstory), and in that part, Ashley by default lives. That made me, for my Mass Effect 1 playthrough, want to rescue Kaidan. That, and the fact he was voiced my Ralph Sbarge, otherwise known as CARTH, THE SICKEST PILOT IN THE REPUBLIC.

If you're romancing one of them, save that one. Be selfish. Otherwise, I'd say keep Kaidan; I don't agree with the people who think Ashley's a racist, but having played through multiple times I always found Kaidan to be a deeper character. And I fucking hate Tennyson.

Back in ME1 I always went with Ashley... Kaiden just seemed like he was more ready for death. Ashley has all sorts of issues she still needs to work out so that she can feel she lived a worthy life. Plus you always save the women and kids first. Also in battle Ashley could be a tank when fully powered up. Kaiden not so much. If he had been better in battle I would have considered saving him. Bottom line though is pick whoever you want to interact with more in the next games. You won't need as many "tanks" in ME3 because you get a whole bunch in ME2. But Even those guys aren't really needed. In fact In ME2 I hardly felt the need to even have squad mates. They rarely killed anyone before I basically destroyed everything on the screen so yeah maybe pick Kaiden.
Either way if you want win over the most allies you can for the future games pick whoever went with the Salarians because you'll win Salarian support in future games.
As for Wrex you have to have your renegade or paragon points very high. Another option is if you got his family armor back I think it may give you another conversation option to calm him down.
