I just heard they are making a movie based on Mass Effect 2.

What do you guys think of this? I think it could be amazing, if they do it right. Otherwise it could so easily be terrible.

I wish they would stop trying to make movies out of games. Leave them alone. So no, I don't think it'll be good.

It could be good. But it won't.

Like someone said in another thread, it would have to be a completely different story set in the same universe because of all the variations and choices in everyone's individual games.

I have a female Shepard and that just won't feel right if I have to watch a male Shep doing all the things I never told him to do!

Oh yeah, that too!

Movie --> Game = NEVER works
Game --> Movie = NEVER works

I think I'm starting to see some sort of pattern here...

It wont be good. The great thing about Mass Effect is its size and epic nature, something impossible to capture in a movie.

EDIT: Plus, they would most likely cut the cast down, and knowing Hollywood, they'ed cut the Krogan (Wrex/Grunt - Best characters in Mass Effect). Unacceptable.

I enjoyed Mass Effect 2.. but what really happened that's enough to make a film from it? As I remember it was a case of being told "oh you need to go through this relay", spending the game collecting characters, then going through the relay.

You heard wrong. They're making a Mass Effect movie, ie a movie set in the Mass Effect Universe.

I'll reserve judgment until I actually see it, but I expect it to be decent should the project be followed through. BioWare staffers are producers in the project which is a very good sign.

You know, the Mass Effect universe is a pretty broad one. There are a lot of different factions, characters, places, and events within it. There is plenty of potential for stories to be told in it that have no big connection the the video games whatsoever. So yeah, I think a Mass Effect movie actually has potential. It could be about events outside of the games. None of the characters from the games would need to be present for it to still be a Mass Effect movie.

Now, if they made a movie that followed the actions of Commander Shepard that is sure to fail. One of the things a lot of BioWare fans hate is when BioWare suggests that there is a cannon Shepard. I can't help but think a movie about Commander Shepard would garner a lot of hate because of this.

Personally, I think it would be better to make a tv series based in the ME universe over a movie. I don't want Mass Effect 3 using the face of the prick in this movie.

They could base a series on anything, on board the Normandy or in the ME universe away from Normandy. I also think they should use CGI characters with the voices from the game, instead of real people ^_^

I have thought of many Mass Effect Universe movies.

Clearly though the best idea is Blasto the First Hanar Spectre: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwfH9oHOzRQ

I think Mass Effect is fine on it's own. No need to destroy it, by turning it into a bad copy of Star Wars. Seriosuly, that's what will happen. See MovieBobs thoughts on videogame movies [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/moviebob/7217-Five-Great-Movies-About-Videogames]. I say "bad idea".

It's narrow-minded to assume that movies based on games won't work out, it can be done well if done right. Many of the directors so far simply didn't do it right, some even approach a game without the slightest grasp on why people like the game that could fit into a movie.

But personally, I think it's bad idea to do a video game movie with the plot entirely based on a game, A video game movie that carries some decent originality while keeping the essence of the game is what helps the mainstream understand why the fans like the game, while allowing the fans of the game to enjoy the movie to a similar degree.

Also, personally, If I were to do a Mass Effect movie, since the game francise is already well story-oriented, I wouldn't base the movie directly off the plot of any of the games, but I might introduce another chapter into the Mass Effect storyline like the guys that did the Mass Effect novels did.

One could base the movie on a major battle of the Krogan Rebellions, or anoter story on the adventures of a Alliance or Cerberus soldier like the games did with Shepard or Jacob, or something like that.

think that would be a good approach for a Mass Effect movie?

I think that would be good.

Personally, I'd avoid a movie all together, maybe a TV series would be better. I'd focus on what Liara, Garrus, Tali, Wrex, Joker and Kaidan got up to after the Normandy blew up :). Or something like that.

Haven't they learned by now that video games never make good movies. Even now it will be worse because you had the moral choice angle which would totally changes the feel of the game.

They should make a splinter cell movie first.
I agree. Lets put Mass Effect 2 on the back burner of a stove....attached to a van....driving off a cliff.

Any game involving choice is a horrible idea for a game. The amount of options in the Mass Effect series they'd have to miss out would ruin it for pretty much all but the lucky few who have it turn out how they want.

A film in the Mass Effect universe could easily work, as long as it wasn't based directly on the games story.

The Hunt for the Shadowbroker perhaps? Or something completely different...
