I really love them both, they're both fantastic game series which completely got me immersed in the experience, but I have fonder memories of playing through Fallout 3 than either ME game

I have to give it to Mass Effect just because I consider it the best Sci Fi I've ever experienced.

Fallout 3 was my favorite game for a long time...until Mass Effect 2 came around. Let's list it.

Fallout 3 > Mass Effect 1
Mass Effect 1 > Fallout 1
Mass Effect > Fallout 3

So from the above data I have to say Mass Effect, but only slightly. But I must admit giving up on Fallout 1 shortly after starting.

I adore Mass Effect, but I just couldn't get into Fallout.

I think I didn't really like Fallout because they didn't get me emotionally invested in the game like Mass Effect did.

Mass Effect. It's not even close. People complain about the barren side planets of ME1. That's all Fallout is.

EDIT: noticed you're talking about the series, not just the latest games.

I withdraw my post. I can't comment as i've not played any fallout games except fallout3 :)

I'm like Taishere on this one: I only played Fallout 3 (plus The Pitt), but I enjoy the Mass Effect franchise far more. The choices you make are more significant in the long run, plus the conversation system is much more engaging.

This is pretty much exactly my opinion, except I played all the way through Fallout 1 and I haven't played ME 2. I actually liked Fallout 2 least out of the good ones (rampant bugs, a little too tongue-in-cheek), with Fallout 1 and Tactics being about even(Fallout 1 for story, Tactics for gameplay), with Mass Effect being better than both, but not as good as Fallout 3(story sucked, but I've always dreamed of an open-world shooter Fallout. It was everything I was hoping STALKER would have been). Is the general consensus that ME2 is the better one?

How about letting FO:NV come out first before we start making threads like this.

If you want to be fair compare ME1 to FO3....obviously FO3 is the winner....ME2 is another story.

But to be even more fair the games are like apples and oranges:

ME is about discovering new friends and embarking on an impossible quest to save the galaxy from a great evil.

FO is about discovering yourself feeling truly alone in a harsh world that sees you as dinner.

And considering I'm an X-Gen, FO will always be the better series....I mean we're a generation of loners go figure...lol

Both are fantastic series, there's no doubt about it. But I've invested far more time in both Mass Effect games and enjoyed every second of it.

I don't know if you can compare the two. Fallout's been around for a lot longer, and has 2 classic games plus the third one which is really more of a reboot. Mass Effect just has two games. I suppose if I had to compare...I liked the first Mass Effect game better than any individual Fallout game. The story was engaging, the characters well-developed, and the missions interesting. But the second one was a complete and utter disappointment. I liked both of the first two Fallout games much better because I like RPGs, and I like RPG elements, which ME2 declared war on for some reason. So Mass Effect is the superior game, but classic Fallout is the superior series. Make sense?

I love them both equally for different reasons. However I've only played Fallout 3 so I'm not judging the series as a whole.

Shooter with RPG elements or RPG with shooter elements? Pause wheel vs. VATS? Space Opera vs. Post-Apocalyptic Epic? Road Warrior vs. 2001? Alien poontang vs. raider booty?
Which one do you define as being a shooter with RPG elements? They're both quite definitely WRPG's which feature guns.

Also have you ever seen 2001? Because it's nothing like Mass Effect, other then the fact that they both take place in space.

I was referring to Mass Effect 2, at least from what I've heard.

2001 is just the movie that I thought had the most to do with Mass Effect. Yes there are elements of Star Trek and Starship Troopers in there, but I like 2001 better. The Protean relay on Mars being the key to mankind's advancement into the stars is the obvious example. But the better example is something you might not have found. One of the planets had a floating metallic orb that Shepherd touched. When he did, he was dragged into an ancestral memory of a Cro-Magnon seeing the same ball, and of being changed by interacting with it. Shepherd wonders if this is proof that the Proteans may have directed human evolution, or maybe even the evolution of all sentient races. Maybe that religion about the Makers is right. It's hard as hell to find, as it requires alot of maneuvering with the Mako, so if you weren't big on finding every resource you probably didn't find it.

And, ya know, murderous AIs, the first that you run into looking suspiciously like HAL.

EDIT: Nice avatar by the way. Does it represent a particular branch of politics, or does it just look cool?
