I jsut found this video and it's completely different from the real game unless I'm missing a lot. The galaxy map is WAY better then the mundane thing in the actual game, I'm pretty sure there isn't the weapons shown in this, and I can't find the conversations it refers too at the beginning. Why would it be changed so much> Do you think it was better before?

There are a lot of his videos, so if you're taking about an individual one, please put it up

EDIT: Sure, the galaxy map would have looked much better, but it would have been more of a nightmare to use.

The HUD in general is cleaner, but I like how you don't control the other characters better, but as it is, the prototype beginnings "tend" to look better, but be much less functionally sound as the end result.

The galactic map looked pre rendered to me otherwise it looked like the one in the final game but with a more complicated interface. in all it looked the same as the final just less streamlined.

also they gave away the major plot twist in that trailer

That vid was from a full year and a half before the game came out, of course shit got changed. That entire dialogue with the Salarian is gone, and the interface was changed (to be far more clear, IMO).

A 4 minute vid for E3 that they obviously spit-shine is not going to be the same as the 30+ hour game that comes out the year after.

This is an early version of the game. They were talking about interruptions for the first one, but they cut it out. Among other features. But something like that map would have been cool, but they must have had a good reason for cutting it out.

A few of those aspects actually looked better than the final product

They could have easily kept the galaxy map the way it was, and I had no idea you were originally going to be able to play as your squad members, it always struck me as odd, that Mass Effect was the only Bioware game where you only controlled one character, well barring

For the most part, it just looked half done. Heck no it wouldn't have been better half done. What a stupid question.
I just liked what they put in, and considering the nature of some side quests would have liked it to be added to increase content. I thought it was far more engaging than the actual final game.

You NEVER just go by a trailer. EVER.
Mass Effect was just like that video. But I'm glad they changed the map interface. Navigating that would have been hell. Mass Effect is pretty much like this video, though with some modifications. What you saw was an unfinished prototype. That wouldn't have been better.

That's because you built up what it could have been. When you create something in your head, it's never going to be as god as you think it would be. You just loved the mystery, and a mystery is never as good after you figure it out.

I liked it the way it was. mass effect has you control your character the whole time. it makes the game far more engaging. however, i did like one thing: the galaxy map. i dont remember if me1 is the same way, but on the second one you had to fly from planet to planet, which was annoying. clicking through them would be much easier.

Well, just like in movies, sometimes what is shown in a demo is not in the final product. Maybe that side quest was pulled, maybe that was something they created just for the trailer... it happens. Recent example: the Iron Man 2 trailers... a certain major scene in a few the trailers is nowhere in the movie.

Personally, I like the game the way it is now. The PC UI was (personally) much better than the trailer's, the dialog seemed forced and slightly awkward to me (idk why), and the asari's voice acting seemed weird. I don't know, something didn't feel right. Originally when I started ME, it caught me off guard how you couldn't directly control your party characters, but that system of control sort of grew on me. The map... I have no idea what to think about that. Part of me wants to see what that could have been in the final product, possibly being a better system, but a bigger part of me likes the system they currently have in place.

IMO - the problems that ME had (bland environments - planets, bland side quest locations - they all occur in a small lab, a habitat, or on a small ship; they all look the same, the vehicle... etc.) weren't covered in the trailer. I prefer it the way it was in ME.

The grass is always greener on the other side. Once you get there, you finally realize that you gave up your prime real estate for a small patch of bland dirt. Idealizations kill desires.

It looks to me that it's just an E3 demonstration, and virtually every game presented at E3 is changed in many ways before it hits shelves. Be it drastic overhauling or minute details like the layout of the UI, etc.

Very true, plus the video was released a year before the game, and was probably designed to draw out some hype from people. However, I really liked the galaxy map. That definitely could have been put in.

Other than a few differences, that video WAS Mass Effect 1; it just looked somewhat different. I doubt it would have been any better had they kept it that way. Definately different but not really better. I liked the actual ME 1 fine enough. This version just looked a bit more dynamic at times.
