So I was on YouTube and for the most part people were considering bands like Def Leppard, Led Zeppelin, and Van Halen as metal bands. Others were saying that since metal has evolved they should be called something else. What do you think?

They deserve to be known as Classic Heavy Metal, because they were the pioneers of the genre which has evolved substantially since then. They're still metal though, and usually only metal 'elitists' try to claim otherwise.

there's several different kinds of metal, you cant just group them all into *just* "metal". some people get really picky about sub-categories though

Ok for the record and this is FACT Black Sabbath created metal as a genre. I'm not just a Sabbbath fanboy or anything but it was because of Tony Iommi, their guitarist, that metal has many elements of blues while having a heavier feel to it. Research it if you don't believe me. Anyway for this reason I think Van Halen is the only one of those three you could maybe call metal but this is mainly based on the guitar work.

They still come under metal as a musical genre and attitude, but I'd consider them Trad(itional) Metal, rather than modern Heavy Metal.

Others may disagree but I realyl don't go into the sub-categories that much. Metal is still metal as far as I care.

Yeah it's sort of hard to think of them as metal considering all the things that are out there now, but I suppose they still are. There are just so many different kinds.

I've always concidered them more of rock than metal. I'm surprised every time I hear someone calling them metal bands. I guess they can be concidered as classic metal though.

they're metal on the basis that they laid the foundations for what would eventually evolve into metal as we know it today, although that was back in the days when the borders weren't quite so hazy...

I'm not a fan of any of them, with directions taken and sub-genres formed in the world of metal, I'd be more pressed to put those bands in a "Classic Heavy Metal" genre

Greg Prato said "Iommi is one of only two guitarists (the other being Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page) that can take full credit for pioneering the mammoth riffs of heavy metal.

Iommi himself has said Page was an influence. I think Page has just as much influence on the creation of metal.

Oh, and it isn't a fact, it's your opinion.

I suppose thats true but it's because Tony was missing the tips of his fingers that the guitar was constantly tuned lower, resulting in the heavy sound of metal guitar. So partially fact and partially opinion.

Classic Metal.

"Metal" as an overarching genre has some really divergent styles (compare, say, Rhapsody of Fire to Venom, Slayer to Nightwish, Blind Guardian to Cannibal Corpse...). Counting Led Zepplin, Def Leppard, and even some Queen stuff as proto-Metal is perfectly acceptable.
