Enough people on The Escapist have started using them as their Avatars so... I'm guessing they're decently popular.

Because they're making money, obviously. If competetors see something vaguely interesting about their rivals, they'll make effort to bang out approximately the same product. Hell, just look at shoulder buttons, control sticks, and rumble packs.

I love them, they are way detailed compared the the crap ones on the Wii, they actually have feet, plus they have customisable clothes that are released often, they also brought out Party Chat, which can have 8 people talking to eachother at the same time, even though sometimes you can get randomly disconnected from the party, hopefully they fix that soon.

Trust me, it is alot better than Nintendo's, great change.

Uhhh the avatars are free. So MS essentially invested alot of loot into something for us little people to attempt to make us happy. Is avatars a console seller? Are there people out there who said "meh I don't want a 360". And then the NXE launches and all these people said "avatars, must buy 360". It is pretty unreal the amout of bitching that has come from them. Oh Noes MS gave us something for free. Effin sucks. The nerve of them updating the dashboard at thier own expense and includes something that is comparable to the competitors idea. The nerve!! I have never been so insulted in my life.

I can't get my Xii to resemble me nearly as good as my Mii does... I didn't need them, anyway. I also don't use it as avatar on XBL.

I like fooling around and making avatars that look like famous people or characters, when I'm bored. My current avatar is Jack Bauer, and my previous one was James Bond (Daniel Craig version).

Had the exact same problem and I'm baffled by it. With a few days of tweaking I got my Mii to a point that when people see it randomly on the lists they immediately recognize me. My Xbox360 avatar, because it's less cartoony than the Mii I guess, just gets awkward.

I like them, and while i know there were a complete rip-off of the Mii. The AVATARS are actually drastically improved versions of the Miis.

I think what you mean is hemophiliac. Not "hermaphrodite".

Nah, I don't think their better than nintendo's Miis. Yes they maybe more detailed, but the mii system is way more flexible when it comes to editing your facial features. To start, you can't change the size, position and orientation of the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, eyebrows, hair and other stuff (like eyeglasses, facial hair, facial marks, etc.). This may not sound like much compared to all the hip cloathing and accsesories you can put on you're 360 avatars (plus the HD graphics) but thanks to that the miis end up looking more like their creators than the 360 avatars. I've compared all of my friends miis with the avatars and not only are the miis more charming, but they are way more accurate to the point where sometimes they even seem to capture the creator's soul. The thing is, everyone I've spoken to about this agrees with me. This is a perfect example of the old saying "more is less".

They are a sad copy. I thought when they would be way more sophisticated cause they were raving about how they had made them so much better than the wii mii. But they are not. They are a sad excuse.

There not realy Mii's but more like personal avatars, while Mii's are poorly animated gimicy bull shit, if your going to do a cheap show trick like crappy avatatrs then at least do them well, hence microsoft, I don't like them but the beat the fuck out of nintendo's Miis.

why people ask if free features are good or worth it are beyond me, hell if my game console could cook toast whilst I'm using it, I'd use it. whilst it is a blatant attempt to compete with Wii, and possibly home on the Ps3 with the news of 1 vs 100 (the user interactions) does not make it a bad thing for xbox users. extra stuff for free is fine..

I like them, they are MUCH more detailed than the ones on the wii, but that dosent change the fact that microsoft ripped off the idea.

They're alright. I like the NXE for other stuff (better menu layout, faster interface, hard drive installation option, the Party system) more than the avatars, but I don't get the whining and angst people have emitted over them.
