Everywhere you go, Tails is referred to as male. (Although admittedly in Spanish he was given a unisex or female translation which fucked things up a bit).

Despite the occasional conspiracy theory that Tails was originally a girl in the first place (and the loads of Rule 63 that can be found as well), Miles is indeed a guy and there is no debating it whatsoever.

I've always thought that tails was a hermaphrodite, he absorbed his twin sister in-utero (leaving the tail intact obviously).

More importantly, don't forget the comic. Tails may have been a useless sidekick, a boring character, a Mary Sue, and the Chosen One for all the wrong reasons, but one thing is for sure, he is a male character.
